I always hated couple dances.
Anything where you have to learn steps is out of question for me.
And I guess since I never had a good body coordination, if its a dance with learned steps, I just stay in my head, then I get confused, then frustrated and eventually just give up, cause I don't enjoy it.
When I first found Ecstatic Dance, it was like a heaven sent.
At that point I was over my partying phase, so I wasn't dancing much, only occasionally.
So finding a place to dance, with a purpose, I was over the moon.
What is Ecstatic Dance?
Ecstatic Dance is a journey, rather than just a dance.
When you arrive, they clearly tell you the rules:
No talking on the dancefloor - this is important for you to stay in your own energy.
No shoes - being barefoot helps you be more grounded.
No phones - again, staying in your own energy.
At the start, the facilitator, who most of the time is the DJ, will do an opening circle.
Doing a little guided meditation, they will ask you to think of something you wanna let go of that day.
It may be a habit, a belief, a situation that has too much power over you, anything really.
Before the main dance starts, there are usually some fun movement based exercises.
Once the main dance starts, you are invited to let your body guide you.
You will allow your body, to be moved by that very thing you wanna let go of, and eventually by moving it out of your body, you'll be free of it.
This may look beautiful and very dancey, but sometimes your body may wanna jump, or roll on the floor, or do whatever it feels like.
It is often a case that one would at some point find stillness during the dance (as a holistic therapist myself, I know that the biggest changes happen in the stillness), so no surprise that as you letting go, you may also enter a state of stillness.
Ecstatic Dance is a wonderful journey, and I make sure to go at least once a month.
We used to have a project; Divine Spark, where we also facilitated Ecstatic Dance, but it is on the pause for the foreseeable future.
So wherever you live, I'm pretty sure you can find Ecstatic Dance, as it is becoming more and more popular.
You may also do you own little practice at home.
Rules are the same, and just let your body move till the very thing you wanna let go of has no power over you anymore.

Oh, thank you sadly that is not my home anymore 😭 i lived there until the lockdowns, since then i live in a smaller space. Still a lovely home, bit i have definitely preferred the one on the picture.
I dont have a good sense of rhythm, nor a good body coordination, so this has really helped me to move more confidently and not care what it looks like
