MONDAY’S MOTIVATION

SPEAK UP

Harriet, a friend of mine, was "terribly black."

Almost all of the students in my school would make fun of her. She was addressed as "blackie." Our collective race was black, but hers stood out. She was made fun of and led to believe that she was ugly because she was black or had a dark skin tone. She started avoiding crowds and gatherings as a result of the mockery.

She was also ridiculed by some teachers. In class, one woman liked to call her a "black ugly thing." Some of the students would laugh out loud and turn to look at Harriet every time she called the girl that.I never laughed;

  1. I was black too. Not too black but black still.
  2. Harriet was my friend.

Something strange happened one day.

This woman fond of mocking Harriet had a very dull daughter in our class. She knew nothing except her name. Her mum was in class one day as usual. She wrote a mathematical problem on the Board and asked who could help solve it.

“I can.” Harriet answered.
“Come and solve it, Black ugly thing.” She called out to Harriet.
“I’m not ugly.” Harriet retorted.
“Mother of a cold skull.” Harriet added.

The whole class was quiet. It seemed like a ghost had appeared in the class.

Long story short, that was the last day the woman called Harriet “Black ugly thing.”

Dear reader, sometimes you just need to speak up and free yourself from any form of slavery you’ve been coerced into.

Do not let anyone triumph over you like death. Open up. Say your mind. Be free.

Upgrade your self esteem!!
