Several brands of Dalda in the country have been found to contain more than ten times the levels of trans fat (acid fatty acids) harmful to the human body as prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute (NHFHRI) found excessive presence of trans fat in 92 per cent of 24 samples of PHOR (Partially Hydrogenated Oil) of Pure, Nutrition, Army and Arrow brands.
PHO is better known as Dalda or Vegetable Ghee in Bangladesh. Although not used at home, it is widely used in bakery and commercially prepared food.
Excessive trans fat intake can lead to major health risks, including heart disease, researchers say.
The study was conducted with the help of the Food Chemistry Laboratory of the National Institute of Health in Portugal.
Professor Sohail Reza Chowdhury of the National Heart Foundation's Department of Epidemiology and Research presented the results of the study at a press conference at the National Press Club on Saturday.
The study found that up to a maximum of 20.9 grams of trans fat was found in every 100 grams of PHO sample, which was 10 times higher than the WHO recommended level.
