The tradition of weaving in South Asia is four thousand years old. The cultivation and production of cotton in the Bengal delta throughout South Asia has been occupying a special place for a variety of extraordinarily smooth fabrics. Greater Dhaka in the delta region has been one of the places for the production and trade of muslin since ancient times. It is estimated that muslin contains 36 different products. Jamdani is the best of them all. The technique of making jamdani is mastered only by the artisans of Arang in Dhaka. In the mid-nineteenth century, Watson collected 1,400 specimens. Of his 15 samples, two were samples of jamdani. Jamdani is not known in South Asia or anywhere else in the world. The design, technique, and structure of South Asian weaving have been based on geographical and cultural influences. According to the Geographical Indication Act, Jamdani belongs to the Dhaka region especially in terms of geography, culture and history. He demanded Dhaka geographical direction in consideration.
