What was the first thing that came to your mind after hearing the word 'Nakshi Kantha'? For me, it reminds me of the poem ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ (The Field of Embroidered Skin) in which the poet Jasimuddin recounts the true feelings attached to the machine with great accuracy. Over the years Nakshi Kantha has made her place in the living room adorned with the beauty of assistants from the beautiful-looking house of rural women. That is why a piece of Nakshi Kantha is no ordinary quilt rather a decorative form that influences our literature and is deeply embedded in our lives and cultures.

When it comes to Nakshi Kantha some points should be considered. First and foremost, how this quilt-making art came about. The most fascinating fact about Nakshi Kantha is that it is a form of human art that dates back to our ancient history. It all started on a lazy afternoon during the rainy season at the hands of a few rural women who sewed their hearts into their old saris. At the time, the women next door used to join the artist in his house for their free evening to help him complete the quilt work smoothly. At that time housewives make Nakshi Kanthas their vacation time with the intention of introducing those to their loved ones and using them to warm up during the winter. Later, the hobby became an art form, and the practice was passed on to future generations by rural women.
