Hey, Come Join the Scouts! 2020. Acrylic on paper, 16 x 20"

From 3rd to 5th grade (ages 9 - 11), I cheated at cub scouts. Wolf and Bear badges were earned by completing tasks in books bearing their names. Parents had to sign off on each task to keep it honest. Well, I wasn’t honest and lied to my mother that I had climbed up the rope, balanced on the beam, and collected tadpoles in a jar.
I wanted those badges (there were beads, arrows and pins too for side achievements), but I wasn’t going to work for them. I don’t remember feeling bad for cheating then, but I do now. During lockdown (late 2020) I bought the Wolf book on eBay and started all over again. I made some videos and paintings while working toward my wolf badge.
Not long after the restart, I put the effort on hold, but hope to get back to it some time soon. I feel better now. I’ve lost weight, and my stamina has improved. We’ll see.
It’s difficult to correct a 45 year lie, especially when your body says “No”.
