The scariest thing is watching neighbor police answer to weak politicians, just so they can keep their jobs and hobbies.
That's been terrifying for a few years now. I'm not sure it's about loss of identity though. Seems many of us lost those after WWII, maybe earlier. It's all about conforming now, especially if you have kids in public schools, or any kind of school really.
It's about loss of being able to pay taxes, which leads to loss of property. Perhaps folks identify themselves via their property?

I’m sure you heard of Milgram’s experiments at Yale in the early 60s? Scary stuff. Group think is impossible to break. There’s always an us if there’s a them. I guess that’s what I mean by “identity”. People taking themselves waaaay too seriously. Some actually get paid to do so. And some enjoy it enough to crush 19 year old skulls.
No one in the United States has property that can’t be taken away by the force of the state. Depressing but true. Crazy for people to ever identify with government power. The tables can always be turned.
