I was up in Yorkshire visiting the family and we went on a day trip to the fabulous village of Staithes which is on the Yorkshire coast north of Whitby. It's a beautiful place with cobbled streets on a very steep hill. So steep I didn't trust my Beetle, which had a dodgy clutch, to make it back up the hill so we had to park at the top and walk down.
The kids loved the bay and played for hours in the rockpools looking for crabs and other critters and I took many pictures which I turned into a series of pastels.
This was large - A2 I think and features my daughter standing and her cousin in the pink top. There was lots of slippery seaweed underfoot.
This one features all the kids with the cliffs and the cafe, houses and pub at the end of the seafront. The two people standing on the jetty were not really there I just added them in for reasons I can't fathom now.
This was also a large A2 painting.
This last one was A3 and was the last to sell. I sold them all, the 1st two in the gallery where I worked at the time and this last one in an exhibition somewhere in Hertfordshire.
This one is looking out to sea with the bay wall in the background.
This was my first attempt at big scale pastel painting and I really enjoyed doing them and was quite pleased with the effect. I love the impressionists and tried to keep to that method with no rubbing/blending but leaving the eyes to merge the colours.
I thought I'd have a real go at waves so went on to do this little pic later which isn't in Staithes but further north on a beach at Marske-by-the-Sea. It was hard work but I thought I'd got a good wet look to the waves. It was very windy so good waves.
This picture is not sold, it is in New Zealand at the moment hopefully coming home eventually. Gifted to my sister who begged me for it. She died so it's coming back I might gift it to her daughter who is in the pic.
This area is where I am originally from.
Staithes featured quite regularly on a tv show called The Fast Show.
The windows are So dark…. Almost black. …. Ha ha
Beautiful Avatar though.
yeh she's cool, pretty much how I looked years ago, no option to make a fatter older avatar, guess we're all stuck being teenagers.
That’s ok…. Our avatars will be around a lot longer than we will.
I bloody hope not. I've jus found this avatar on my blog page and don't know how to get rid of it. It's slowing everything down.
Oh… I think that one is temporary.
well I can't see how it got there or how to get rid of it now
It’s a mystery. Hopefully we have the option to remove it.
Nice work
Thankyou
