Dream

This artwork is the second and last installment in my art collection, Phantasmagoria. To learn more about the details of this installment, you can read more here. In a nutshell, Phantasmagoria tackles life, dreams, and reality.

Dream contains an element that most generally describes goodbyes and, in extreme representations, even death. The red spider lily, often seen in parts of Asia, depicts the permanent separation of two entities.

In Buddhism, this flower serves as guide for the dead through the cycle of birth. Its meaning can be both beautiful and bittersweet, and I want that to be incorporated into my painting.

Dream, in detail

If there was something I truly liked throughout the process of painting this, I think it's to do with adding glows into the butterfly and the flowers. They give off this fantastical feel to the work.

Notes

Three days ago, my pet dog, Chuchay, passed away. She had been really weak for a week, but I didn't expect she would pass. I cried for a whole day, and would still cry occasionally until now. I wished there was a red spider lily where I'm at, so I could at least offer her the flower that had such a bittersweet meaning.
