Glass is still something of a mystery. Beautiful and ethereal, strong yet fragile, it is neither a solid nor a liquid, instead it is an amorphous solid - a state between solid and liquid - and is often called a “rigid liquid.” Despite being a common everyday material, scientists still don’t understand how glass forms. In 1995, Philip W. Anderson, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist at Princeton, wrote: “The deepest and most interesting unsolved problem in solid state theory is probably the theory of the nature of glass and the glass transition.”
