  • Choice of rabbit rearing
There are different breeds (kinds) of rabbits. They differ in coat colour at maturity.
The male rabbir is called buck and the female is called doe. They must both be healthy in other to choose them for rearing.

  • Housing
They are raised in cages or hutches. Cages or hutches may be made of wooden frame and wire netting at the side and base. Hutches vary from 46cm-72cm in height. The floor of the hutches are usually made of 1.5cm wire-mesh which allows the feaces and urine to drop to the ground. During hot weather, it is good to cover the roof with palm fronds or grass thatch and to water with sprinklers to keep the house cool.

Rabbits can also be raised on a solid floor, littered with wood shavings.

  • Feeding and drinking equipment
Feeding could be made of metal, wood or clay. Drinking equipment can also be made of metal or clay. Sometimes, cans can be modified into feeding and drinking equipment.

The equipment should be placed in the rabbits house.

  • Feeding materials
    The feeding materials include:
    (a) Hays
    (b) Grasses
    (c) cereal
    (d) Grains
    (e) Leafy vegetables
    (e) Dry bread
    (f) Pelleted ration
    (g) Kitchen waste
    (h) Mineral salt
    (i) Clean and cool water
    (j) Concentrates such as groundnut, palm kernel, soybean and cotton seed.
Rabbits can be reared on combination of the above feeds.

  • Disease control
It is better to prevent diseases by adopting good management practices.
Disease outbreak can reduce profit margin through high death rate. Rabbits should be checked at least twice everyday.

Conclusion
Any rabbit that looks dull or refuses to eat or is unable to stand, should be removed from the cage. It should be isolated any closely examined for any signs of diseases by a veterinary doctor. Rabbit hutches must be kept clean, cool and well ventilated.
