The cat breed, whose name sounds like a magic spell - Maine Coon, originated from cats that live on farms in Maine, in the northeastern United States.
The literal translation of the name of the breed is the Maine (Manx) raccoon. Why is that? Because the size and color of Maine Coon cats resemble these animals. There is information, most likely from the realm of legends, that some cats of this breed reach a mass of fifteen kilograms. Fifteen is not fifteen, but they are by far the largest domestic cats.
The visiting card of Maine Coon cats is their massive rectangular body with a wide chest. The large head is set on a muscular neck of medium length and has a straight, sharp outline. High cheekbones and an angular, well-defined muzzle of medium length give the cat a special appearance.
