Not a deer or a small giraffe - it's a gerenuk! Almost unknown in Europe, the animal has a large body, a small head and a long neck, reminiscent of a miniature giraffe. It is actually a species of antelope that belongs to the same family as the gazelle. Gerenuks live in Tanzania, the Masai steppes, the Samburu reserve in Kenya and East Africa.
Gerenuks live in wooded, desert or even open wooded areas, but there must be enough vegetation for herbivores. The excellent physical characteristics of gerenuks allow them to survive in harsh environments. They do some pretty impressive tricks to get food.
Animals breed at any time of the year. They do not have a courtship and breeding season like other animal species. The absence of special time frames for mating and casual courtship of a member of the opposite sex allows gerenuks to increase their numbers, having offspring all year round, quite quickly.
