Broad-nosed (broad-faced) lemur, or broad-banded hapalemur (lat. Prolemur simus) is a rare species from the lemur family. The only member of the genus Prolemur.
The animal is endemic to Madagascar, and was previously distributed in the northern, northwestern, central and eastern parts of the island. Today, the range of the species is only 1 to 4% of its original range, limited to the southeast of Madagascar, where it occurs at an altitude of 120 to 1600 meters.
The diet of the animal is 98% bamboo. For these purposes, the lemur has sufficiently powerful jaws, with which it is able to gnaw through the hard shell of the stems in order to get to the soft core. From July to November, animals feed on the core of bamboo, and in December they switch to fast-growing shoots. The remaining 2% of the diet falls on flowers, leaves and fruits.
It is included in the IUCN Red List and in the Appendix of the Invention on International Trade. Is under the threat of extinction. According to the IUCN Red List, it may soon become endangered; population is progressively decreasing.
