Local geography involves the study of one's immediate. It involves the study of physical and socio-cultural aspect of the locality. Some of these physical aspects include but not limited to mountains, valleys, creeks, rivers, while the socio-cultural includes also but not limited to markets, church, mosque, transportation,music, etc. Locality in this sense includes towns, cities, villages, Local Government Areas (LGAs).
VILLAGE
A village is a small rural settlement. It consists of hundreds or thousands of people. Social amenities are limited in villages such as electricity, water, etc. When several hamlets come together, a village is formed.
Characteristics of a village
- It is relatively small with hundreds or thousands of people who know themselves very well.
- It consists of people with the same culture and language.
- Only a few social amenities are available.
- It consists of few buildings and relatively small amount of people.
- Fishing and farming are the basic activities of the people living in villages.
Functions of a village
- Agriculture: Agriculture is usually the main occupation of people in the village. They provide agricultural good and services for themselves and also others who need it.
- Fishing: Fishing is also one of the main occupation of the people. They provide fishes by fishing in rivers and creeks.
- Lumbering: Villages also indulge in the production of planks, timbers, and plywoods for construction purposes.
- Religion: Villages which churches and mosques are found within, involve in religious activities.
- Small scale shopping: Villages have a small scale of shopping activities. They have small shops, local markets and involve in small commercial activities.
