On 10th day of Nov in 1995, nine Niger Deltans including Ken Sarowiwa were sent down to the executioner by the government of General Sani Abacha. The only crimes committed by these fellas were; protesting against injustices and parking their heavy duty tanks against the path of incessant governmental insanity and impunity, corruption started in African years back and it seems it is not ending most in Nigeria.
Sarowiwa's gruesome demise and that of eight others did not only mark the end of an era, it was an indirect death certificate for the State of Nigeria, because, till date, Nigeria is still in an endless international legal wrangles in a bid to recover the money allegedly stolen and stashed away in foreign accounts by General Abacha for the benefit of foreign governments and their citizens.
What kind of leader incarcerates his own people or at worse kills them just to have his way to embezzle public funds meant for the development of his own people?
The amount of money collectively stolen by the government that killed Ken Sarowiwa is more than the total amount spent to miraculously transform a former desert land into a mega city known today as Dubai.
Before the death of Ken Sarowiwa, he prophetically told the government of General Sani Abacha that we would all stand before history. Indeed, today is that prophetic history. Where is Abacha? He has not only gone down the drain, he left an indelible legacy to his name called "Abacha loots". A millennial child who doesn't know Abacha knows "Abacha loots" - sadly, a very bad way to remember a leader.
Who won? Ken Sarowiwa,of course. He may have died in the eyes of humans, but, he is truly not dead. Sarowiwa is not just only resting in utopia, he also left a good name behind.
We would live to rekindle your candle of truthfulness. If the successive military regimes in Nigeria couldn't withstand you, then, we would continually tell truth to power and also stand in court to defend the truth just like you did.
They will arrest us, incarcerate us and have our assets confiscated along the line, which is their usual trait, but we would not bother. If you could pay the costliest price with your life in defence of truth, then, we would have no cause to capitulate.
Rest in power and in bliss, GREAT MAN.
We all stand before history.
