Good afternoon and happy Sunday to you all. It's been a great week, I mean the just concluded week. What made the week great you may want to ask.
Twenty years ago, as the news headline carried it. A young man named Hillary, who was studying architecture at the University of Jos, in northern Nigeria suddenly went mad. This occurred during his project defense for certification of a master's degree in the same university.
According to one of his friends, Suleiman Ibrahim, on the eve of their project defense, he discovered Hillary who is very disciplined in attending to his academic needs and pursuit wasn't finishing his drawing. It was unusual of him. Being a friend, he helped him out.
On the day of the defense, he presented his papers very well and even the drawing. That goes to show how brilliant the chap was.
Just at the end of his presentation, he began to question the authority of the professors who were at the seating.
Angrily, the professors sent him out from the conference room. That marked the end of his defense. When Ibrahim noticed that his friend Hillary was not mentally stable, he quickly organized transport fares for him to return to his family in Lagos.
That was the genesis of the mental retardation of the young man called Hillary.
Twenty years down the line, no one was able to rescue Hillary. He started exhibiting traces of madness and could not live with his family anymore. His hair grew in dreadlocks and clothes tattered.
Thanks to the alumni of his alma mater, the University of Jos. On February 14th, Valentine's Day to be precise, a team of his classmates from different parts of the country came to look for him.
They got to his hometown, looked for him, and located him.
They did not believe Hillary in his state of mind will remember all of them. People around were amazed that Hillary could recognize those they referred to as strangers.
They all hugged him one by one. The closest friend, Ibrahim was also there. He wept profusely when he saw that Hillary had suffered the scourge of the sun, the coldness of the rain, and many unpalatable experiences.
Quickly, he led his friends to his family's house where they sought permission to take him for a proper medical check. Hillary's uncle accepted and he was taken to a nearby neuropsychiatric hospital where he was treated.
After two days, he became normal. The doctor in charge of his case said that he will be stable but that because of the delay in reporting the issue on time, Hillary will live on different levels of drugs for his lifetime.
He is recuperating in the hospital. And his classmates with their connection are planning to get a job for him so that he could begin a new phase of life.
To this end, we should know that some mentally sick people are not outrightly incurable.
I like this post. The case of Hillary is the same thing that is happening in many parts of the world especially in underdeveloped parts of the world where proper attention is not given to those that are facing the early stage of some disorders.
I'm glad that his friends remembered him. I hope that would be the end of the madness.
