Part 1: Leading up to the wedding

in blurtafrica •  3 years ago

In my New Year post I had given an update about getting ready for my wedding and my dad coming to Ghana. About a week after he arrived my mother also came. My parents have been divorced for almost 20 years and in a way I was kind of dreading having to entertain them both together at times just in case some things became awkward bu all was pretty fine there.

We had about 4 or 5 days at the resort before we went north to Tamale for the traditional marriage and courthouse.

When my mom came she brought Dzigbordi her rings as a gift from us. The wedding band is 18k gold and was from my Great Grandmother, my mothers Grandmother. And the engagement ring was one that my father bought my mother.

It turns out that my Great Grandfather was a cattle rancher and central eastern Oregon and when it was time for him to go to the city to buy the ring the best way to do that was by train. If you loaded a cattle car full of cows to go to the market you get a free train ticket with them in 1917. I imagine he sold the cows to buy the ring and his return ticket. The place he bought the ring was unknown when my father bought my mom the engagement ring in the 70's, they found out later that he in fact bought it from the same jewelry store in Portland, Oregon as my mom's grandfather. It is also interesting that Dzigbordi's mothers side come from Mossi Royalty in Burkina faso which are a long line of cattle farmers also and if we went by her mothers tradition for the bride price I would have had to present some cows. But in this case it looks like my Great Grandfather sold those cows for her ring over 100 years ago.

This is Dzigbordi feeling excited and relieved to be home again at the Tamale airport.

We took the remainder of that first travel day to relax and rest. The next morning we went to check the final measurements on Dzigbordi's dress with one of her aunts who is a seamstress.

From there we took a yellow yellow into the market to get a few things before the big day.

Dzigbordi needed a few beauty items and I was more interested in getting some grains to plant at the farm like Sorgham, black eyed peas, and millet.

From there we took my parents to Red Clay studio which I have posted about before on my last trip to Tamale. But the great thing is that there was a new exhibit this time so we were able to see new things too.

I got a shot of Dzigbordi in front of a tapestry made from bio plastics. TZ or tzert is a food eaten by people in the north that is similar to fufu this artist used it to make a thin film with different colors added which dries and makes a thin plastic film. The substance all over the floor is gari or ground cassava.

The Parliment of ghosts this time was covered in a thin layer of soot which is common to see in the areas around Tamale this time of year. There are accidental turnings and others intentionally to keep snakes away.

Some views did not change.

Dzigbordi was able to reconnect with some old friends.

One of the exhibits focused on some plants in interesting planters. While we were checking this out one of the youth workshops was going on for young ladies from the surrounding communities. To me it looked like it incorporated togetherness, teamwork and multimedia art. They were all in t-shirts that were sown together into one so they had to move together. They also were making drawings on the each other about what the observed.

This multimedia collage was supposed to represent something like a horse with different bits and pieces around.

The archive which we have visited in one of my prior posts this time set with mats on the floor for the workshop.

Very old Smock shirts.

And a drawer that I did not see before with very old kente cloths inside.

From the archives we went to check out the airplanes on the property. They are used for workshops on technology, art and drones.

pxl_20220118_160419457.jpg

To top off the visit Dzigbordi's old friend did a podcast interview with us all in the parliament of ghosts. Topics ranging from art to how they experienced the visit to Red Clay studio.

The day was basically over by then, the sun was low in the sky with hammattan grit thick in the air, the cows were enjoying the cooler weather and we took it easy after dinner.

Part 2 will be the day of the traditional wedding and courthouse wedding. Stay tuned for that one soon.

All shots were with my Google Pixel 3xl.

WooooW!!!! This was like reading a story, but it's all reality. Weddings for sure are not easy things to plan. I know this cos one of my uncles did a wedding a few years back and I know the stress and activities he had to do to accomplish it. There's lots of spendings involved. It's really beautiful and I am glad to really read this from you. I kind of picture how mine would look like. I'm not prepared for marriage yet, but it's a good insight.

Your wife Dzigbordi is very beautiful. I can see she's also overwhelmed with joy about the wedding.

One thing that caught my attention also was the planes on the property. They all look beautiful. If I lived there, I would likely visit that place daily. If it were to be my younger brother, he would want to spend hours upon hours there looking the planes and feeling them as well. He loves getting his hands on technology.

When I saw the Kente cloths you found in the drawer, it also caught my attention. Here in Nigeria, we also have cloths very similar to that, especially in my tribe Okrika. We call them feni in my tribe. They are all beautiful. All your pictures are very clear and self explanatory. I wish you a very successful wedding.

Yes it was not always easy but we are on the downhill stretch now. My mom leaves later in the week and we are no fully moved into our new place. We hope that next month is a quite one and we can focus on work and the farm again and save some money.

Yeah I think there are similar forms of kente all over west africa and they all have their meaning. I guess the people are all tied together like strips of kenke, all a little different but still one fabric.

Yeah, you're right. We're all connected in one way or the other. I wish you a happy marriage. It was really nice reading from you.

Your wedding arrangements look like a movie and all the story tells it. You're preparing in a nice way. Happy wedding and honeymoon in advance! Thank you sir for sharing these photos and information about your wedding arrangements.

No problem at all.

Thank you for such an extensive view with description into these days leading up to the wedding. I was captivated reading your words as they transported us into the moments captured in picture.

I'm glad your parents were able to get on well. I have no desire to be around my sons mom after being married to her for 20 years, and at most will stomach her for events that call for it, but that would be hours, not days, hahaha.

What a strange custom to sew the shirts together with several in them. I can imagine how difficult that would be if they had to move very far in them.

A lovely ring, the blue stone isn't common in wedding sets making it quite unique. Thank you for the story on the history of the rings.

Hello, thanks for stopping by with a great comment as usual. I am glad I was able to make it interesting for all. I am also happy my parents did not make it any more difficult than it had to be with all the stress and merging of families. I really appreciate them for that.

Yes it was very funny watching the kids walk around in the mess of shirts.

The stone is a cultured sapphire. She loves is and does not care about the lack of value in that part that it was a gift from my mom and parents and that it has a history is what is important to her.

A lot of things become clear from the pictures you send. At the same time the style statement is also great. All pictures are taken with great beauty. Your wife is very beautiful. And enjoying the joy of marriage with her friends . I wish you a happy life and all the best.

Thank you I am glad you enjoyed the pictures and the story. Keep posted for part 2.

Your preparation seemed very charming .
It is not easy to make all the preparations for the wedding. I realized this last year. When my older brother got married. Inviting all the relatives, arranging for their staying , arranging food and drink, and giving them clothes, gifts are all really hard work. But it is also very important to maintain relationships.
I your good and safe arrangements and happy marriage.
Don't forget to invite us in marriage ceremony and party 🎊 🎊 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃

Yes dealing with all the details, costs and people is not easy. We tried to keep it very simple but of course when other people are involved they push their own agenda and things get more complicated but it all worked out.

We had the part on Saturday. I just published part 2, part 3 will be the party.

My parents learning about the northern laborers who go to the south of Ghana to work and they identification tattoos they usually have.

From all indications your parents through your wedding despite being divorced for almost 20 years got along with each other forgetting their differences. The love from your great grandmother, and indeed your entire family tells me how pleased they with getting married. I'm just looking forward to reading and watching more photos of the wedding day
