I made a post the other day and it had to do with the festival of Homowo and some of my black and white photos have been from events around this festival too.

Leading up to the Homowo festival there is a ban on noise making and drumming. This basically included all loud music. I love this month as things are much more quiet and peaceful. At the initial ceremony some grass is placed in the ground at the shrine inside the Osu castle. After 4 weeks they do some sacrifices an dig up the grass in a ceremony lifting the ban on noise making and opening things to the festive season.
Many of the prominent traditional community members, lined up outside the shrine.
The sacraficial goats at the gate to the shrine.
A younger version of myself standing behind one of the fetish priestess and her family.
The Osu Mantse or king entering the shrine.
The procession of priestess leaving the first shrine and headed to the garden shrine.

Myself behind the king and other nobles in the garden shrine.
After leaving the first shrine we went to a little garden oasis inside the castle walls. There the priestesses and fetish priest preformed some dances and rituals with the king eventually joining in the dancing. I have some video I will work on cobbling it together for the next post in this series.
