Homowo Festival is a festival celebrated by the Ga people in Ghana. It is a harvest festival and it literally translates to hoot for hunger. Or in a way make fun of hunger. It is usually around July to August but follows a traditional calendar so it is always a little different.
In the months leading up to it, there are a number of smaller ceremonies that build up to the main festival. Just the other day they instituted the ban on drumming, or noise making in general. I love this time of year because it is quiet in the evening, no churches, or loud music from bars. All loud music is banned for the next month.
When the festival starts each area of the Ga kingdom has their own celebrations. In Osu, in Accra, where I have lived for many years, there are about 4 weeks of celebrations. Each Saturday a different clan goes to the royal cemetery and gives offering to the ancestors.
In this picture you can see the yellow people in their traditional wear at the cemetery. I will be adding more pictures of this festival and events. Perhaps this year we will even be able to get some more pictures as it happens.
