Bedrock Hotel, Cappadocia, Turkey

I would like to share with you probably one of the coolest hostels I have ever stayed in.

If you are not familiar with Cappadocia region in Turkey I encourage you to look it up. This is an area that people have been living in caves for 1000s of years and still do even today. The geological make up of the area makes this very easy with the limestone make up of the rocks and lots of porous passages in them.

These are not some dingy caves, some are 5 star hotels and that level of quaility. There are places where whole cities were built in caves and kept people safe from robbers along the silk road.

I visited this hotel in 2015 while on a trip with my family. Since I live in Ghana and they live in the US we meet sometimes in different places in the world to spend some time together. Göreme is the the most picturesque and popular town in the Cappodocia region of Turkey and a great place to stay to enjoy many of the sights and things to do around the area.

When arriving there really isn't much to see from the street side for this hidden little gem. It is up a steep narrow little road as seen in the pics above. There was just a little 4x4 Lada parked on the road out front completely against the wall so another car might be able to get by.

You step down into the hotel off the street and as your eyes begin to adjust from the bright sun outside you begin to see the allure of the Bedrock Hotel. I know the name brings about visions of a cartoon that I watched when I was a kid the Flintstones but it is more beautiful and finely crafted than imagined. The whole place is carved out of beautiful stones. As you decend down into parts of the hotel it is carved out of the rock itself.

It would seem that a cave hotel would be dark, cold and uninviting but they did well to let in light wherever possible and blend the inside with the outside very well. The reception is about 3 stories down but it is open air above is a view up and into the blue sky. We came in the off season of November so we basically had the place to ourselves. The weather was cool and crisp so all the outdoor spaces were a little chilly but the rooms were well heated by hot water radiator when you get inside.

After settling in we all gravitated toward the rooftop where we were kissed by the afternoon sun. The views were also amazing. Hotels and structures blending seamlessly with the rocks provided a 360 degree panorama. Early in the mornings it was possible to see hot air balloons almost skimming these roof tops.

Above are just a few of the directional views from the roof tops. Ancient and new, luxury and rough all blending together with the natural and created landscape.

Each morning we had a lovely buffet breakfast served here too. Eggs how you want it, fresh cut veggies and many different types of cheeses, bread, honey and jams. With the warmth of being inside and the wonderful views all around.

I probably hawind the coolest room as it was completely underground with a large vaulted ceiling. The window in the pictures above is a little below street level in a window well to give you a perspective. The lighting created cool effects around the room and cut outs into the wall also made for depth of the room. You did not feel like you were in a cave but you could also feel that there was something special about it. The bathroom floors were heated, and a heated towel rack. Everything was very comfortable.

Here is a picture of the room my sister stayed in as comparison it was a couple of floors up so it had wood floors and bigger windows with more views, but it did not give that same cave feel.

If you ever make it to Turkey you have to visit Cappadocia. If you ever make it to Cappadocia I would highly recommend the Bedrock Hotel. It is not the most expensive or cheapest hotel but the rooms are beautiful, breakfasts are tasty and service is very good. The manager was very friendly and even drove us in his own car to the top of the trail of the rose valley one morning for a hike.

Thanks for reading a visiting another wonderful place with me.

@leifasaur this is damn 🔥 beautiful a post. Wow 👌! Infact the management of Bedrock Hotel needs to sign you as a worthy ambassador because your description is as vivid as it is lucid. A fine blend of poetic style with detailed reportage.

Reading through your post further affirms the fact that the ingenuity of man from time immemorial can never be overemphasised. Just imagine a fine blend of housing firmly wedded with rocks 🪨 yet opening up to the radiance of the sun 🌞. It's simply incredible.

Cappadocia is definitely a holiday destination. Thanks buddy I sincerely enjoyed reading this. Cheers.
