Service, The Essence Of Leadership

"Grant me courage to serve others; For in service there is true life."
-- Cesar Chavez

Service is a key determinant of who a good leader is. Being a leader is not about 'being served' as some people believe, it's actually about 'serving others'. I have seen people aspire to be leaders just because of the power, ego, respect and gains that comes with such a position. They neglect the true essence of such a position —service to others.

Leaders who enjoy serving others will have no qualms agreeing with Cesar Chavez that in service there is true life. In fact, there is a certain joy and deep satisfaction akin to fulfilment that comes from being a leader and truly serving people.

It takes courage to be a leader. Not everyone is built for leadership positions but we have been leaders at some point of our lives.

Leaders who have failed in their positions do not realise that it takes a heart of courage and selflessness to handle such a responsibility. Going into such solely for the gains may prove to be a disappointment later on, hence the failure.

I have been a leader most of my life and attest to the fact that it's all about service to the followers. Apart from the service, there is the burden of responsibility. A leader takes the responsibility for the act(s) (good or bad) of his followers and in this case, courage and Intelligence cannot be underestimated.

For a leader to succeed, he must not work alone. It helps to have people with good heads on their shoulders assisting him in this responsibility.

Cesar Chavez's quote makes the failure of my country's government so glaring that I am ashamed to be a citizen. Our leaders are solely after the gains of the position and filling their pockets. As another election is upon us, they are hustling for the gains of the position rather than the work involved. They know nothing about serving people, they rather steal from the same people they are tasked to serve.

Being a leader is much more than the prestige that comes with this position, it's about giving oneself to others. And in turn, the people will give you the needed support.

Do you know what it takes to be a leader? Your thoughts on this are highly welcome.
