Impatience and fear of heights are some of the reasons pedestrians refuse to use the pedestrian bridge, risking their lives and that of other. Most people are always in a rush and as a result of that they will prefer to run as fast as they can to cross to the other side of the road, but on some occasions the long dash across the road isn't always successful. It is very dangerous to try to risk running across an highway with different vehicles at different high speed when all it takes sometimes is to walk to the pedestrian bridge, which is more safe and has little risk.
The taxi driver that took me to church yesterday was telling us how a car crushed two women that were trying to cross the highway the previous night. He was a witness of the gory incident and the expression on his face as he narrates the story says it all - how bad the experience could have been. This is just one in so many of such incidents that have been happening across so many highways in Nigeria when people prefer not to use the pedestrian bridge.

It has been argued by quite a number of people that the pedestrian bridges are far from bus stops, so it takes more time and energy to walk down to the bridge, then some amount of energy to climb up and down the bridge. So, it is a waste of time to most people when they can easily run across the road in few seconds after they have carefully checked both sides of the road. Others have argued that some of these bridges are too high and they are always scared to climb them, hence their choice of using the alternative route which is a dangerous one.
One passenger bluntly said she prefer to risk running across the road rather than using the pedestrian bridge, especially at night because the bridges have been a cool spot for hoodlums, pickpockets and even armed thieves to way lay people at night. Most of the bridges do not have lights, so it is very easy for bad people to strike and rid people of their hard earned properties. So, all day long, she'd risk using the alternative route rather than falling prey in the hands of thieves.
The nonchalant attitude of human beings to serous issues like this is really alarming and needs to be addressed in order to prevent further occurrences of these sad incidents. The driver further pointed out that about five other people were lucky to not have been caught by the vehicle that crushed the women - they were more faster and that was what saved their lives. Security agencies were at the scene within few minutes after the incident had happened and mandated everyone to make use of the pedestrian bridge which they all complied to under duress. To the greatest of his surprise when he was plying that route later that day, people have gone back to their normal routine since the security men have left the scene.

A constant orientation is needed for the general populace to make them know that the pedestrian bridge is meant for their safety and that life does not have a spare one - everyone has only one life and it must be cherished. Also, there could be strict measures like punishment such as payments of fine or community service for anyone caught crossing the highway in the wrong way. These strict measures will make people not to think of crossing roads by dashing through between cars at high speed.
