Wisconsin Governor Floats Marijuana Legalization In 2021 Budget To Boost Economy

While Evers attempted to get marijuana possession decriminalized and medical cannabis legalized through the budget in 2019, Republican leaders in the legislature nixed those measures from the final spending bill. There’s since been an open question about how the governor would navigate the issue this time around, but now he’s indicating he may go bolder.

Evers criticized the legislature for failing to act on the more incremental reforms at the beginning of the year, citing overwhelming public support for medical cannabis legalization.
Speaking to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a recent interview, Gov. Tony Evers (D) said that adult-use legalization was on the table—despite facing opposition from the legislature over more modest cannabis proposals in the past.

another sign of the times, city officials in the state’s capital voted last month to remove most local penalties for marijuana possession and consumption, effectively allowing cannabis use by all adults 18 and older.

New Jersey Cannabis Legalization Bill Stalls
Legal adult-use cannabis in New Jersey has hit a roadblock.

However, despite this back-and-forth, one thing remains constant; as in states that already have legal cannabis, New Jersey is headed for a chance to earn some serious revenue once the industry becomes fully legalized. The state could bring in as much as $450 million a year once the market is truly up and running.

It will take some time for all parties to agree, but once New Jersey legislators do push through a legal cannabis bill, the business of building up the legal industry can commence.

Marijuana Research Bill Would Have Little Impact On Federal Budget, Congressional Analysts Say

These are just two of relatively few cannabis-related bills that CBO has scored. The department reported last year, for example, that House-passed legislation to protect banks that service the marijuana industry from being penalized by federal regulators would save federal dollars and increase deposits to financial institutions by about $1.4 billion starting in 2022.

CBO also analyzed an earlier bill on marijuana cultivation for research purposes as well as legislation on clinical trials of medical marijuana by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and letting VA doctors recommend marijuana to patients. Each of those were estimated to have little to no impact on the federal budget.

But the CBO score may have some other reasons for them. It shows that the MORE Act would reduce 73,000 person-years of prison time. It would increase revenues by $13.7 billion. It would provide $3 billion for job training and legal aid to people harmed by the war on drugs. While doing all of this, it would reduce the deficit by $7.344 billion.”
