Life keeps moving forward. For better and worse. #500wordsaday

Sometimes it seems these days as if life will never get back to normal. Certainly if you watch the news on a daily basis or follow all of the panicked social media warriors you will believe that not wearing a mask to the shop will burn down the rainforests. It all gets a little old after a while.

The number of corona cases has been steadily rising in Ireland for the past couple of weeks for a variety of factors. The biggest being that all of the schools re opened at the same time and this has led to a lot of cases and a lot more testing of family units. I know of a lot of people who have been sent for testing as their child had the slightest flu symptoms but the schools will not let them in until tested negatively. We are testing a lot larger number of people than during the first wave of the virus which has led to more asymptomatic people testing positive and a lot more cases in the under 35 bracket. Very few fatal thankfully so it’s mainly cases without any extra medical help needed.

Universities have also been reopened in the past few weeks with mostly online courses but it has had the inevitable effect when a large number of young people get away from home and a 6 month lockdown with their parents. They are enjoying some drink, drugs and sex. Can’t say that I blame them either. They have a very low risk and have been locked up for months with little to no social interaction. Now they are totally free from supervision with predictable results.

With all of this in mind we have been moved from level 2 to level 3 restrictions earlier today. Nothing too serious but it means more restrictions and more shite. The last thing that people wanted.

The worst thing is that we can only blame ourselves. For all the social media hate campaigns against this group or that group. The simple fact is that some common sense and personal responsibility would have gone a long way to keeping the numbers down. Even where we knew there were cases people have been travelling and hopping from house to house.

Throwing parties, no protections. People meant to be in quarantine still going out and about. People doing the entire wrong thing and expecting the right results. A town gets locked down so people flee from it as fast as possible to the seaside so that they don’t have to be subject to the restrictions.
You see videos online every day and wonder at the stupidity of man.

Our politicians meeting up for big golf tournaments. Our teams having victory parties in the streets. People taking off their masks to talk to the person directly in front of them. People skipping the test so that they won’t show as a positive.

I am not a huge person to follow stupid rules and don’t for the most part. I follow the rules that make sense and have done so throughout this whole mess. The ones that will keep me and mine safe through this miserable time. The rest, I take with a pinch of salt. If it makes no sense or can’t be justified then it’s not going to stop me from doing something.

Students are young. They are meant to be reckless and stupid. It’s part of growing up and we have all been there. I don’t blame them at all but when you see the adults doing worse things it is enough to make anyone despair.

You can shout at people for not wearing masks every day of the week but it’s your job to look after yourself. Protect yourself and be sensible. If everybody took some individual responsibility then we would get through this shite with the best results possible. Faster, less painful and with some degree of respect.

Until then we will have increasing levels of government interference and no end in sight to the whole sorry mess.

Life will keep moving forward but not the life we want to be leading.
