About a year after the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19), it is clear that this global epidemic is worse than the seasonal flu. A research report released on Friday states that the death rate from corona is three times higher than the flu. AFP News

The study used French national data. The report was published in the medical journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. The report focuses on the growing severity of the disease in patients with Covid-19.

Intensive care is needed in more corona patients than in influenza patients. The comparative rate is 18.3 percent in Corona and 10.8 percent in Influenza. Again, the interval between their stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital was almost double. Corona patients had to stay in ICU for an average of 15 days. Influenza patients have to stay there for 7 days.
The researchers compared data from 69,530 corona patients admitted to the hospital in March and April this year to patients admitted to the hospital from December 2017 to February 2019 with seasonal influenza. 17.9 percent of covid patients died during the study. At that time, the first wave of Corona spread across Europe in a very deadly way. At that time, the medical personnel were facing various restrictions in treating the complex patients of Corona.
At the same time, the mortality rate of influenza patients was 5.6 percent.

The study was co-led by Professor Katherine Quantin of University Hospital in Dijon, France, and the country's National Institutes of Health, INSERM. Catherine Quantin said the difference in corona and influenza mortality rates is particularly noticeable. The study of influenza deaths in 2018-2019 was the deadliest flu season in France in five years.

The authors of the research report said that at that time, twice as many influenza patients were admitted to the hospital. However, they also said that the rate of hospital admissions for influenza may have been lower due to previous vaccinations.

The researchers found that more corona patients needed intensive care than influenza patients. The comparative rate is 18.3 percent in Corona and 10.7 percent in Influenza. Again, the interval between their stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital was almost double. Corona patients had to stay in ICU for an average of 15 days. Influenza patients have to stay there for 7 days.

According to the report, the hospitalization rate of children under the age of 18 in Covid-19 was much lower than that of influenza patients of the same age. These rates were 1.4 percent and 19.5 percent respectively
