Here at @junglegirl's tribe in Northern Thailand, basket making is a way of life. The traditions of hundreds or maybe thousands of years live on. This all happens in a country known for it's use and waste of plastic, yet the tribe still does things the old fashioned way.
Look at the handicraft and skill. Instead of some piece of plastic you have something here that holds value all the way down to an energetic or emotional level. Imagine making this yourself, by hand; then using it in the fields on a daily basis. Talk about being connected to the land.
Regardless of all that, things are always more special and provide a sense of fulfillment when made by yourself. @junglegirl's first school backback was hand made by her mother. If that does not have value in it's own right than I do not know what does.
In Sri Lanka, a similar product is used by tea pluckers. Image is from the internet. But in our down south estates, we use plastic bags 😔. These handmade bags are very expensive.

Wow. That is a beautiful place. Coming from New York, sometimes it's hard to imagine that working in this setting with these baskets is everyday life for many. Thank you so much for sharing.
Those woven baskets are stylish and of course environment friendly @world-travel-pro. It is nice that the tradition of basket weaving goes on to continue in junglegirl's tribe because these baskets are still used by some people who needs its function like storage or maybe transporting goods.
When I was younger my mother would go to the market along with her wooden basket where she places some the items she would buy from the wet market, fish, meat, and vegetables that will be our food for the next few days. It was really a great feeling for me and my siblings when she returns from the market as if she returned working from abroad lol, that joy is so precious. 😉👍
Thank you so much @cryptopie for sharing those memories with us. Reminds me of when my mom would come home with groceries, my brother and I would be so excited.
Very nice baskets! Hopefully they continue to pass on the skills.
I've made a basket out of cedar roots before, it took several dozen hours, still have it somewhere.
Hey, missed this comment. That is cool, cedar roots. I'm still yet to hone my craft...
I went to a basket shop when in Thailand and wanted to buy the whole lot. I bought a sewing basket for my sis for xmas tho and she loves it. here in Ireland we also have trad baskets and I have been to a few lessons and made my own baskets. I'd love to learn more tho in the future. Am even thinking of growing my own willow too.
This is a trad Irish method of weaving I learned called Creel
Wow! That is really cool! I love Ireland, and hope to revisit someday. Very rich in culture, all the way down to the Creel! Thanks for taking the time and sharing!
My wife is also from the area in the north of our country where they are well known for their baskets. The tribal lines continue to cross.
Tribal line do continue to cross. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. This one slipped by me for a while.
Back to the origin , Bamboo craft is much better than plastic bag
it's a bamboo craft that is usually used for goods and vegetables for farmers
That is 100% correct!
I often see it where I live
