In 1920, Azerbaijan came under the control of the then Soviet Union but got sovereignty after the fall of
USSR. Historically, Turkey has been maintaining a strategic relation with Azerbaijan as Turkey increases
natural gas import from Azerbaijan and decline reliance over Russia in this regard. On the other hand,
Armenia has a warm bilateral relation with Russia, a fact indicating any severe conflict between two
countries may result is a proxy war seen in Syria.
Moreover, the Nagorno-Karabakh region’s people
have a desire to establish a sovereign state that is
completely ignored by both countries, intensifying the
tension over this region. Experts have estimated that
both Turkey and Russia will be geopolitically
involved if condition in this is deteriorated.
Two former Soviet Republics have been fighting for a
week over ownership of the South Caucasus region.
And, immediately after the beginning of war, Turkey explained its positioned to support Azerbaijan. A
mediating group including France, the USA and Russia has taken measures to reconcile this conflict but
Turkey said, “only if Azerbaijan occupies this region, peace and stability in this region will return. The
belligerent attitude shown by Turkey - according to the opinion given by experts – shows its desire to
enhance its dominance in this region. Moreover, both countries including Turkey and Azerbaijan have
signed an agreement on defense cooperation. Armenia has alleged that Azerbaijan has used SU-25 plane ,
an advanced technology by Turkey that was shot down by Armenia military. Azerbaijan and Armenia
have accused each other of swiftly violating the terms of a ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh
region, raising questions about how meaningful the truce, brokered by Russia, would turn out to be

Under the international law, Nagorno-Karabakh is recognized as part of Azerbaijan. But ethnic
Armenians, who make up the vast majority of the population, reject the Azerbaijani rule and have been
running their own affairs with Armenia’s support since a devastating war in the 1990s following the
collapse of the Soviet Union (aljazeera).
Finally, Russia supplies arms to both Azerbaijan and Armenia; consequently, Russia has called for an
immediate end of this war. But if Turkey get excessively involved with this war, Russia – to balance its
power – will be forced to choose either of the two counties, said experts. Moreover, our world is already
experiencing the brutal impact of a pandemic caused by COVID-19. Now, we should be united regardless
of race, religion, culture etc.
