E-waste is defined as unwanted electronic items that are no longer functional and are nearing or have reached the end of their "useful life." Everyday electrical items include computers, TVs, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines.
The issue of how to properly dispose of obsolete and unwanted electronics is not a new one, dating back at least to the 1970s. But a lot has changed since then, notably the amount of gadgets that are being wasted.
Another thing we have now is a word for this problem. After numerous titles were proposed, including "Digital garbage," a consensus developed around the simple term "e-waste."

E-waste is any abandoned electrical or electronic equipment. This covers both functional and damaged things that are discarded or donated to a charity reseller such as Goodwill. If an item remains unsold at a store, it is frequently discarded. Toxic compounds naturally leak from the metals within when e-waste is buried, making it especially harmful.
