Charles Romley Alderwright (7 September 1844 – 25 June 1894) was an English lecturer in chemistry and physics at St Mary's Hospital Medical College, London, England. He was a founder of the Royal Institute of Chemistry.
Alder Wright developed hundreds of new opiate compounds and was the first to synthesize diamorphine (heroin) in 1874. He also discovered (aluminum antimonide).
Alder Wright attended Owens College in Manchester from 1861-1865 and graduated in 1865. As a student, Wright worked as an assistant to Henry Roscoe and conducted early research on vanadium.

, cannabis has a long history of human use. Many ancient cultures did not develop the plant to high standards, but it may have originated in Asia as early as 500 BC as an herbal medicine. The history of hemp cultivation in America dates back to the early colonists who cultivated hemp for textiles and rope. Political and racial factors in the 20th century led to the criminalization of marijuana in the United States, but its legal status is changing in many places.
Cannabis, or the hemp plant, first evolved before humans introduced the plant to Africa, Europe, and eventually the Americas. Hemp fiber was used to make clothes, paper, sails and rope, and its seeds were used as food.
Because it is a fast-growing plant that is easy to grow and has many uses, hemp was widely cultivated throughout colonial America and in the Spanish colonies in the Southwest. In the early 1600s, farmers were introduced to the colonies of Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
These early hemp plants had very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for marijuana's mind-altering effects.
There is evidence that ancient cultures were aware of the psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant. They have cultivated some strains to produce high levels of THC for religious ceremonies or healing practices.
Roasted cannabis seeds have been found in graves in China and Siberia as far back as 500 BC...
In the 1830s, Sir William Brooke Naysey, an Irish physician studying in India, discovered that cannabis extracts could reduce stomach pain and vomiting in people with cholera.
By the late 1800s, cannabis extracts were being sold in pharmacies and doctor's offices throughout Europe and the United States to treat stomach upsets and other ailments.
Scientists later discovered that THC is the source of marijuana's medicinal properties. As the psychoactive compound responsible for marijuana's mind-altering effects, THC interacts with areas of the brain that can reduce nausea and promote hunger.
In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved two drugs, Marinol and Syndros, in pill form with THC to treat nausea caused by cancer chemotherapy and loss of appetite in AIDS patients.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus described the Scythians, a large group in Iran in Central Asia, as inhaling the smoke by smoking cannabis seeds and flowers.
AD After about 800, hashish (purified cannabis smoked from a pipe) was widely used in the Middle East and parts of Asia. Its popularity corresponded to the spread of Islam in the region. The Qur'an prohibits the use of alcohol and other drugs, but does not specify...

The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 was the first federal US law to criminalize marijuana nationwide. The Act imposed an excise tax on the possession or transfer of the sale of all hemp products and prohibited all but industrial uses of the plant.
Samuel Caldwell, a fifty-eight-year-old farmer, was the first to be prosecuted under the Act. On October 2, 1937, a day after the act was passed, he was arrested for selling marijuana. Caldwell was sentenced to four years in prison.

As part of the "War on Drugs," the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, signed by President Richard Nixon, repealed the Marijuana Tax Act and listed marijuana as a Schedule I drug. High potential for uses and abuse. It is recognized in anti-drug programs such as D.A.R.E. (Drug Prevention Education) as a “gateway drug”.
In 1972, a report by the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (also known as the Schaefer Commission) issued a report titled "Marijuana's Misunderstood Signal." The report recommended “partial prohibition” and lower penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. However, Nixon and other government officials ignored the report's findings.
In the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medicinal use by people with disabilities.
