Ayam Semani Chicken
Ayam Semani is an unusual and relatively modern type of chicken from Indonesia. They have a strong gene that causes a dominant strain (fibromelanosis) that causes the chicken to turn completely black; Including feathers, beak and internal organs. Ayam means "chicken" in Bahasa Indonesia. Semani is named after the village on the island of Java where this source of chicken originated. The breed originated on the Indonesian island of Java and has been used for religious and mystical purposes for centuries. The breed was first described by a Dutch colonial settler and was first imported to Europe in 1998 by Dutch breeder Jan Steverink. Currently, this chicken breed is kept in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Ayam Semani is also thought to have been brought to Europe by Dutch sailors. Their beaks and tongues, black patches and wattles, their flesh, bones and even their organs are black. Ayam Semani's blood is usually colored. Blackness in birds is caused by a genetic condition called fibromelanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation of the tissue. This gene is also found in other black chicken species. The weight of chickens is also seen. 2-2.5 kg and from 1.5-2 kg. Hens lay cream-colored eggs with a slight pink tint, and they are poor settlers but rarely hatch their own. Average weight of eggs is 45 grams. Ayam Semani acquires blackness from a common condition called 'fibromelanosis', which promotes the proliferation of black pigment cells. The gene that causes fibromelanosis is a mutation that originated in Asia 800 years ago. This mutation leads to other chicken breeds, such as the Swedish Black Hen or the Swart Honna, which have similar fiber characteristics to Ayam Semani and are black like the Indonesian breed. Ayam Semani are highly revered in Asia because their meat is believed to have supernatural powers. Their meat is considered high in iron and therefore useful for women before and after childbirth. Birds are sacrificed during childbirth in the belief that the laboring mother will have good luck. Chicken is also offered on other special occasions as it is thought to bring good luck. Some Asians believe that eating this chicken will lighten their consciences and their cries will bring prosperity. The chicken lays cream-colored eggs—the only part of the ayam semani that isn't black.
