Swordsmithing is a craft that has been practiced for thousands of years and is based on bladesmithing and forging processes. Swordsmiths specialize in forging blades that are more than 24 inches in length in order to create steel swords. Swordsmiths forge swords from a range of steels, including high carbon steels and several forms of pattern-welded steels known as Damascus steel. Swordsmithing takes years to learn and is one of the more deadly weapons a smith can create. Because of the inherent hazard, you should take a class and learn from a competent bladesmith.

Pattern welded steel swords may be traced back to the first millennium B.C., with Celtic, African, Germanic, and Roman swords being the first to use the technique. During the Middle Ages, layered Damascus steel, a type of pattern welding, was also utilized in South Asia and the Middle East.

Swordsmiths in China are credited with developing technology that spread to Korea and Japan, where swordsmiths created revolutionary techniques and new weapons such as the katana. Japan was ruled by the military from 1185 until 1333 A.D. Because of the requirement of defense, this became regarded as the "Golden period" of Japanese bladesmithing, as they were swift to create new technology and skill surrounding swordsmithing.
