Although Sri Lanka is a country without volcanoes, many people do not know that a volcano has appeared in the distant past. It happened in Kottunugoda area of Kothmale. Just hearing this, some people may think that this is false. But I say this because I have experienced enough evidence for this. The evidence for that is as follows.
Pits of unknown depth that are currently found. These are known as koth pits. These pits are believed to have been formed by volcanic eruptions.
The area of Kothmale was famous for iron in the past. It is believed that the metal used to make this iron came from the volcano.
It is said that even King Dutugemunu made the necessary weapons for war from Kothmale area.Folklore and books written about Kotmale also confirm that a volcano was created.
Metallic stone blocks (yabora) found in this area even now. These are very strong and heavy unlike normal stones.
There are various stories from folklore about how the Koth pits came to be. According to them, it is said that three spears appeared from time to time at that place and were sent back and sunk. This is in Mr. Samantha Jayasundara's Gemunu Kumaru and Kothmale Janakatha book and P.D. A child of Mr. Dasanayake was also sacrificed in the book Ran Puhulaya
Beautifully described. I will show it like this as mentioned in the book "The golden treasure that killed a child".
One day, three drummers were going to Kankariya. On their way to Bowi at night, they saw a volcano suddenly appear in the distant mountain. Scared, the three of them came out and started beating the drums. After a while, many more flames appeared in the sky. At the same time, another one appeared. The whole area was lit up. Seeing these three pillars that had never been seen before, these three people were scared and screamed from the basement. After a while, all three of them disappeared. After that, leaving the Kankariya aside, they went down to the village and started beating the drums continuously. People ran to them to ask what the sound of the drum was. The drummers said that three big pillars appeared on the mountain of Ahawal. A few villagers had seen this, so they all got together and went to the place where the three pillars appeared. When he looked, he saw that three large holes had been formed. Since three koths appeared, they started to call Kotunu Goda Kanda from that day.
The name Kothmale is also due to this incident. That the area where Koth emerged was called Kothmalai,
Because three pillars emerged, the place is also called Kottunugoda. And the name Kalapitiya is derived from the name Kalal Pitiya. Kalal pitiya means pitiya where mud is deposited. What is referred to as mud here can be mud.
Only three pits of unknown depth and a large ditch can be seen at this place. No one knows the depth of these pits, which are as big as an ordinary lake. As a child, I heard that the small pit that was here recently has been closed to make a playground.
My grandmother's original house was also nearby. I heard many things from her.
When a stone is thrown into these pits, the sound of falling in and hitting the stones on both sides is heard continuously. It can be concluded that these are very deep. It is also said that the water or something that came out of this flowed away along this canal
This canal is connected to a koth ditch on one side and the other end is open to the slope of the hill.
It is also possible to descend into this canal. The area at the foot of the mountain on the side where this canal opens is called Nawangama. It is said that this area was famous for iron industry in the past. This is also a proof of low tide and now this area is under the reservoir. Prince Gemunu secretly hid from the king near this village. It is also mentioned in the books that he went to the forge and crushed a piece of iron to make a hoe by himself.
I went down into that ditch to see this ditch. It was a very difficult task because we had to walk through trees and grass. I have been down this trench on previous occasions but have been reluctant to walk through it due to its eeriness. The width of this trench varies from 2-3 feet to 20-30 feet in places.
The depth is only 20-30 feet in some places.
Due to the trees growing above, the interior is dark. Therefore, traveling there is also very difficult.
In some places there are stone embankments on both sides and in some places there are earthen embankments on both sides.
Where this canal begins, there is another pit. I haven't seen it yet either. The reason for this is that it is surrounded by trees and grass and the canal near it is very narrow.
If the walls on either side of this gutter are re-approached, they fit together exactly.
From that it can be concluded that this trench was formed by moving away due to a crack in the earth.
The photo shows a piece of Yabora stone found in the area of Ratanasara College, Kalapitiya Village, Kotmale.
These stones are frequently found in the soil of this region.
When you look closely at this piece of stone, it is seen that it has flowed like a liquid. This also indicates that a volcano was formed in this area.
This incident is known to many people, but as far as I know, no proper investigation has been done about this place yet.
I remember that there was a story that smoke was coming out of these pits and it was even shown by the media. But after this incident was suppressed, the pits hit the jungles again. There are very few residents of Kothmale who know about this. I intended to write this article as a fulfillment of my duties as a resident of Kotmale for many people who do not know that such an incident happened in our country.
