Priapism is a condition in which a man is unable to prevent erection of the penis despite no stimulation. It is a medical emergency and sufferers should see a doctor immediately.

Photo: Carol Raddato, Flickr As it will come as no surprise to anyone with even a passing knowledge of the ancient Greek gods, there is an Olympian with a giant lunge. Priapus was a minor god of fertility, often associated with protecting livestock, gardens and fruit. The Greek colonists of Lampsacus (Middle East) first worshiped the god. However, this was in B.C. In the 3rd century it spread to mainland Greece and Italy. He is the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, lust and sex. It is unclear whether his father was Hermes, Pan, or the serial philanderer and rapist Zeus. Life has not begun for the minor god. Hera, queen of the Olympians and wife of Zeus, cursed Priapus with an ugly, depraved mind and is described as 'awkward impotence' as a curse for Aphrodite's involvement in the war at Troy. This curse is not great for a fertile god. That meant he had a permanent penile erection until he had sex. The Olympians are not known for their empathy, so they drag the young, ugly Priapus into the mortal world. Raised by E Derun after a while, he found a home with nature's pans and satyrs. The whole time surrounded by fertility energy is too much for Priapus. Another image of Priapus was found in Pompeii

Hertia (goddess of the sacred fire), a highly sacred goddess in the Greek pantheon of the Commons Latin poet Ovid, fell asleep after a night of drinking with the other gods. Priapus crosses her path and then makes his decision: he will corrupt Hertia. Priapus mounted the unknown goddess. But Hera's curse—which she defied—ended up saving the sleeping goddess. A donkey woke up the goddess before attacking Hartia. Her screams roused every other god and Priapus fled in shame. From that day onwards he demanded donkey sacrifices from his followers. According to another myth, he pursues the lotus Lotis, who escapes the god only when she transforms into a lotus tree. As time went on, the worship of Priapus became less about fertility and more about the creation of erotic scenes and jokes in Roman baths. Mostly, he is the subject of rude jokes. His legacy lives on in modern medicine. Priapism is a condition in which a man is unable to prevent erection of the penis despite no stimulation. Dennis Jarvis, unlike Flicker Priapus, who was still considered a minor deity even at the height of his reverence, was one of the defining members of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. Popular between the Middle Kingdom (2040 - 1782 BC) and the New Kingdom, Min is the god of fertility and male sexuality. This represents a v-shaped rod (representing the fields and vagina) in one hand and the erect penis in the other. Egyptians worked mainly in the fields, so the gods of agriculture and fertility were male (Osiris is another example). All his rituals, then, seem to involve the phallus and co-operation. The minimal festival started the harvest season. For four days people reaped the harvest and played naked in his honor. One game involved climbing a massive pole. But it's more on the nose than a symbolic penis climbing game. God is associated with the Egyptian jackfruit lettuce and people consider it to be lust. When pressed, a suspicious sperm-y substance is tall, straight and secretes. It was offered to Min before consumption by men to increase fertility. BC At least from the 7th century

The most sacred god of all, Heb Zed, presided over the ceremony. This tasked the pharaoh with maintaining a series of texts while carrying ritual objects. The work is said to revive him while confirming his virginity. Later, in the New Kingdom, one ritual involved planting seeds to prove the pharaoh's fertility. Some scholars suggest that 'seed planting' meant that he wanted to ejaculate instead, to prove that he had children and would be an heir. Thousands of years later, when visionary Christians saw the erection of his huge penis, Min's depictions suffered great damage. Archaeologists in the 18th and 19th centuries also carried only photographers and litter above the waist. It depicts two of the world's oldest free standing statues from BC. As far back as 3300. You can find them at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, UK. Unfortunately, they are less erect.
