Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanjing, was a mass slaughter and devastation of Chinese residents and capitulated troops by soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army following the takeover of Nanjing, China, on December 13, 1937, during the Sino-Japanese War that preceded World War II. The number of Chinese slain in the massacre has been widely debated, with most estimates ranging from 100,000 to over 300,000.

Matsui Iwane, commanding general of the Japanese Central China Front Army that took Nanjing (the Nationalist Chinese capital from 1928 to 1937), ordered the city's destruction. Over the next several weeks, Japanese soldiers carried out Matsui's orders, carrying out countless mass killings and rapes.

The troops pillaged and burnt the neighboring towns and cities, destroying more than a third of the structures. The Japanese established Nanjing as the seat of their Chinese puppet government, led by Wang Ching-wei, in 1940. (Wang Jingwei). Matsui and Tani Hisao, a lieutenant general who had directly engaged in murder and rape, were arrested shortly after World War II ended.
