Acute diseases induced by heat rays, fire, explosion, and radiation emerged quickly after the bombing at Hiroshima. These effects wore off after four to five months. The consequences of the A-bomb lingered even after the acute problems had resolved. Keloids (excessive scar tissue formation over a burn) and leukemia were among the side effects.
Five to six years after the attack, the number of survivors diagnosed with leukemia grew substantially. Survivors began developing thyroid, breast, lung, and other malignancies at higher-than-normal rates ten years after the explosion. Many infants that were in their mothers' wombs at the time of the bombing died before birth. Some of those born alive had a condition known as microcephaly.
