63 years ago on November 3, a dog named Laika was sent into space for a test mission. But the creature did not return to earth. Laika was the test dog of the Soviet and NASA space programs and was the first animal to orbit the Earth. This dog was trained and used for this mission as the only living creature aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2, which was launched into space on November 3, 1957.
Laika or 'Little Barker' or the dog's real name is 'Kudjavka' in Russian, which means 'rebellious' in Sinhala.
This animal was captured from a certain street in Moscow. The type of animal is said to be a hybrid of two types of dogs, husky and terrier. The animal was about 3 years old when it was caught from the street.
The reasons for choosing this animal are its tameness, ease of training and ease of adaptation to the Sputnik 2 capsule.
They did not want to bring the spacecraft or the animal back to Earth after the test mission, even though the animal was provided with the food and water it needed to sustain its life during the space probe mission. In fact, that journey is leading Laika to death, or it is Laika's death sentence.
Inside Sputnik 2, there was only a small space for Laika to sleep and stand up. The interior temperature of the aircraft was set at 15" and a refrigeration system was installed to protect the animal from extreme cold during the test period.
At 2 am on November 3, Sputnik 2 was launched into space with Leica. After getting there, Leica has only lived in space for seven hours. But some sources say that the time Laika lived in pain was even longer, about four days.
The spacecraft carrying Laika's remains returned to the atmosphere on April 14, 1958, after 5 months of 2.525 orbits in space. But after re-entering the atmosphere, it exploded and was destroyed.
