How to get number plates.
We all know that our country Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon during the British rule. About 50 years before we got independence, British businessmen wanted to import cars to Sri Lanka. Thus, in February 1902, the first car brought to Sri Lanka was powered by steam. It belongs to the "Rover Locomobile" type and was imported by a businessman named Edgar Money. He was a shareholder in Bousted Brothers Company, Colombo. By this time, several major cities in Sri Lanka were connected by roads that were passable by carts or bullock carts, but they were not suitable for motor vehicles. It is said that he used the car brought by Mr. Mani to take long journeys to distant cities, and sometimes traveled at a speed of 10-15 miles per hour. Driving at a speed of 25 miles per hour was also a traffic law for several decades. Mani was going to go to Nuwara Eliya in his car but had to stop it at Ramboda area. The reason was that the car could not cross the Ramboda pass. In the end, he had to spend the night in Ramboda that day.
The first patrol car brought to Sri Lanka was a 5 horsepower Oldsmobile. It was imported to Ceylon in 1904 and the importing owner was G C Gnapp. He has worked as an agent for importing cars to Sri Lanka. The first Sri Lankan to own a car was E.L.F. De Soysa and the second Sri Lankan to claim a car is N. D. B is Silva. By this time there were only 21 cars in Sri Lanka. Harold North, who was a tea estate owner in Gampola area, was one of them. The association was established on November 12, 1904 with the participation of 100 members in a meeting held at the Queen's Hotel in Kandy and has gone down in history as the first automobile association in Sri Lanka. Brigadier General C.C.L. Manny was elected and Harold Noth served as the first secretary and treasurer. However, only three Sri Lankans have taken the initial membership of this association. F. J. De Serem (junior), his son Leslie de Serem and Dr. Van Rooyen were the three. F. J. The Seram Enekata was the only one to claim a "Daimler" car in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Vehicle Registration Number Plates As we all know, vehicle numbers start with the importation of vehicles to Sri Lanka. This first vehicle registration took place in 1904 (in some documents it is also mentioned as 1903). The first number written and settled in Sri Lanka is the number Q 53. It is a number given for a Wolseley type car. After that, according to the regions of Sri Lanka, the numbering from the English letter A to the Z mark took place. Accordingly, letter A was registered for Colombo district, letter B for Kalutara district, letter C only within the jurisdiction of Colombo Municipal Council, and letter D for Kandy district. After that, in 1940, the ABCD system was changed and the vehicle number plates were separated according to the letters of the name used in Sri Lanka at that time, CEYLON. First CEYLON used 2 letters CE and after that letters CY and CL were used. The letter O was not used for a car number because it looked like a dot. Therefore, after CL was used, it was used as CN category. After that too, the issue of numbers started with the letter E. Accordingly, the numbers EY, EL, EN were used. Then the use of English letters was removed and the letter Sri was used in the middle of car numbers. Accordingly, the first number called 1Sri 1 was allocated and it was allocated for Sir John Kotalawala, a former Prime Minister. Number issuance started on December 12, 1956 and continued for a long time.
