A bird in hand: Fixing Blurt

in blurt •  4 months ago  (edited)

Yesterday I made a post ridiculing what passes for Hot and Trending here at Blurt. This little series I'm writing is inspired by conversations I've had with Khrom and MK.

https://blurt.blog/blurt/@practicalthought/33emdw-my-black-and-white-photo-meal-and-acting-fit-and-who-i-voted-for-post

Right now, here are the top 5 Hot posts one would see coming to Blurt.

(The era of 100,000 coffee shops nationwide~)

2- WWE - Blurt : Imagination Contest || Put your imagination to work - #161

3- Market manipulation at peak

4- Fruit photography #1

5- photography

Only one has a comment, and it is the spam I was here and voted message from C-time.

Let's take a look at the top 5 trending now.

1- A lazy paddle up the River

([Blurt #1383] Creepy!)

3- Meine Actifit-Report-Card: Juli 3 2024

4- How did you come across blurt? - Take part in the survey and get strong upvotes

(The era of 100,000 coffee shops nationwide~)

Only one post has REAL comments, and it is the only interesting post in either top 5 in my opinion. I would suggest everyone else as well since it inspired no one to talk. None of the other posts have comments.

A saying with much merit is the bird in hand.

This has to change, or the potential bird in hand that sees Blurt for the first time will nope out of here quick.

No one who respects their own time and creative abilities would feel inspired to place their work amidst such boring work. Especially when this place appears like a ghost town in interaction.

In a discussion with MK, I mentioned the need for SEO to show up in search, to which he dismissed the need for SEO. He said that Khrom measures the visits from search and questioned how it had helped Blurt at all.

I would posit that it helped a bunch, it was many facets including the ABYSMAL care put into posts and lack of interaction that is the first impediment against us with the potential new birds in hand.

They came, they saw and they left.

The amounts earned on these posts range from about .80 to the only worthwhile post by Khrom which is the outlier at a whopping 2.51 value.

While some in economies that have been raped by the West can find that helpful, not so if you live in the West.

I do wish to point out that Blurt is not worth what it says most of the time. Twice in the last few days, my wallet value has decreased by almost half with only 60.89 in trade volume.

Imagine how low Blurt would be right now if someone had wanted to unload thousands of dollars worth?

That does not sound too lucrative. For the pure investor type, there is much downside and not any real upside. The charts going back years bear this truth out.

So let's pretend that our new visitor is not deterred by the low effort posts that are the hot trending posts of the entire site.

Pretend that the very low payout for producing also isn't a deterrent.

They click the sign me up button and see two ways to join.

They pay 3.00 in cash or spend 10 Blurt, obviously the better deal.

I'll give credit where it's due here. The offer to pay cash to join is genius and allows those (the majority of people) with no experience in crypto a means to join despite their ignorance of keys and exchanges.

However...

Most folks will find the above to be a deterrent to participating.

In the push to make everything online, folks are overwhelmed with the amount of passwords those in power are trying to force on us.

Having to adopt a James Bond mindset with not one but FOUR passwords that are super long strings of characters is not what the average person is looking to add to their lives.

ESPECIALLY for at best one or two dollars a whack.

I could go on about the way it still isn't explained at this point in the process one will need to become adept at password management (keys) and learn the one exchange we are listed at to even buy in if of a mind to do so.

Without SEO we rely solely on word of mouth, which is lacking again if you search the web.

Real bloggers spend an inordinate amount of time on other social sites like Pinterest and work their asses off promoting their blogs. And it still takes a lot of time (years) to generate any real traffic. Search engine discovery is still king, as witnessed by the decimation of blogs after the HCU update.

The March update hit like an aftershock that toppled many of the bloggers remaining standing after the HCU. Many prominent SEOs were hit with Manual Actions before the algorithm could even affect their sites.

source

In conclusion, it's my recommendation that we make Blurt easier to buy than the one exchange we are listed on. Where one can buy in with cash as we see has been offered to sign up.

If we can offer a means of buy in that simplifies purchasing Blurt, it will ease some of what I've discussed.

I have no solution for the pathetic shit that passes for Hot and Trending. It seems obvious to me that most users here are apathetic and could care less that their postings damage others who want to express themselves creatively from wanting to be here.

My last recommendation is to get rid of this ridiculous 7-day payout window.

It makes no sense. We all have the stake pull we have, and whether it is used on a post from the last week or four years ago has no effect on this stake voting limitation.

Why is a post of value only of value for seven days?

That's a huge impediment. In the real blogging world pages written years ago, if written properly will continue producing income for potentially years and years.

It makes no sense as I point out, only acts as a deterrent to those serious of their blogging craft who are trying to create residual forms of income as most blogging efforts offer.

I could have said much more, but I feel this is enough. I really don't plan on blogging here anymore. In over 6 months back from curating I've earned maybe (based on the recent fall of value) about 30.00 for my curation.

I still will continue curating.

I only made this and the last post to offer my insights based on conversations I've had with Khrom and MK. I believe both are trying to think outside of the box and repair this rut Blurt is digging deeper for itself.

I believe in the coming week I'll write one more post, in which I'll outline why I appreciate the tools offered here because this place doesn't have to be doom and gloom and falling value.

A lot of it depends on the stakeholders here. If you continue to treat this place like shit, don't have a surprised Pikachu face when the value is shit.

Start treating this place as worthy of your heart and valuable and that will go far in offering a different first view for visitors from SEO.

My last recommendation is to get rid of this ridiculous 7-day payout window.

I agree, but is it technically possible?

I think it has to be. It's code that made there a time limit, so it seems to me all one would have to do is either delete the lines of code that make it a 7 day window or alter it and make it some crazy number of days like 7300 days (20 years) in place of where it says 7.

In option two you would have waited 20 years for the payment. In option one you would get an instant payout after every vote, there would be no trending and hot and the blockchain might not be able to withstand so many operations or it would eat up all the resources of the servers that host the witness nodes

maybe I am completely wrong, it would be nice to get the opinion of someone who knows how this blockchain works

You're confusing variables, but it's easy to do since they tied several together.

I was discussing the variable of how long a post can earn. That is a different variable than when a post pays out.

Each variable and desired outcome would need its own line(s) of code to force the action.

Since you brought it up, that variable on payout (7 days as well) could also be changed as well, although I have nothing intelligent to say on it as I don't understand what impact on the pool that change would have. The end of the 7 days to earn would have no impact as we all only have the voting power we have regardless.

One example of a minor tweak to this area of code is at Steem/Hive, the closer to the payout one voted, the more diminished their vote is on it. They got rid of that here at Blurt.

Buenas noches,

Good evening,
If seo is useless, why is it the first element taken into consideration to measure website traffic? why is it so important for Youtube? why is it so important for adsense? for Microsoft? for Apple or Google?

These are questions that anyone who is immersed in content creation can answer without hesitation, especially people trained in the area of IT can corroborate how this benefits web-based projects. Seo matters because it positions the content and those keywords always keep the content visible within millions of publications.

I always read in the comments grow the platform. But how exactly do they do this? in the real world by giving utility to the coin or token, without that it really makes no sense to make any effort. Blurt already has a base infrastructure, but lacks other apps that give more utility to the token, so efforts should be focused on providing other experiences, but also on rewarding good authors, not those who make absurd content.

I agree about SEO, and when I left here I went to a blogging school for one year, despite already having some self taught knowledge.

I had mentioned in a comment to MK I tried to teach others here SEO before I had left.

https://blurt.blog/burnpost/@practicalthought/sfuz5k

I showed how a post I wrote to demonstrate (a hive blurt comparison) still ranked 3rd for the keyword string in question. It likely still holds the number one spot for various other strings.

I do wish someone with the time, money and knowhow would have built atop us the way Aggroed did with Steem/Hive.

I've long been an advocate for quality posts that inspire robust comment sections. That is what makes Reddit so powerful. There are some threads I read there that take an hour because the comments are so informative or entertaining.

Thank you for adding your thoughts to this important topic.

On sister platforms, the content curation process is complicated and has often been demonised by one sector. However, a point in favour has been to reward original publications, the use of seo has been constantly encouraged and it has been the communities themselves who are actively reporting content plagiarism. By this I do not mean that republishing content is a crime or a reason not to vote for it, on the contrary, it should be done if it is really worth it.

I am in favour of a curation window, where human interaction is taken into consideration, where there are real comments and not curation accounts, after all our finances are based on fees and our interactions are few.

I'm not a fan of reposting publications from other platforms, however to continue meshing ideas, I remembered that some time ago on a sister platform there was a kind of campaign to improve the seo of publications and they are still doing this type of promotions. This shows that perhaps as a platform it has become difficult for us to bring our users closer to good practices or at least how to generate content that is valuable to the platform and that will be rewarded with good money for him. Here is an example of a post

"How to optimise my posts for SEO on Hive
Among the topics we'll touch on today are how to properly use subheadings in our posts and how they help optimise our posts for SEO on Hive. In addition, we will talk extensively about the different user search intentions on Google, Bing and other search engines, as well as tools that allow you to find the keywords that will make your post a TOP 10."

Gadikian

So, suppose you've got these goals in mind:
Make blurt more usable
faster page load times, comply with google recommendations and get ranked higher
Wider selection of markdown page elements available
BLURT price appreciation
dead-simple usage of Blurt
dead-simple deployments of Blurt front ends
Customization
Decentralization
Security

https://blurt.blog/blurt/@jacobgadikian/the-whole-front-end

His presence here has been missed.

Grow the platform and the problem will solve itself.

You don't appear to have read the post. This is discussing why the platform is not growing, and how maybe we can get out of the way in creating the deterrents that are causing folks to not like what they see. Valid reasons for not liking what they see.

I wasn't going to discuss this again with you, but since you came to me it opens the door.

I was disheartened by your own recent activity here, adding to the low quality that chases folks from wanting to be here. Those little few sentences that are mostly lacking context.

But I see you've continued on with your little time wasting vendetta with Hive. I remember writing this post years ago just for you.

https://blurt.blog/blurt/@practicalthought/cross-chain-enmity-is-a-waste-of-time-aka-learning-to-let-go

Not only are you still slandering them, but continuing to plagiarize their art. I thought that was not allowed here at Blurt, why are you getting a pass from the Blurt wardens?

There were several decent popular members back then that came here to Blurt to try it out and left after the ridiculous shit you've been saying about so many over there. So we see a direct connection between your own actions and chasing off the bird in the hand.

So many of you went at it with Lucy saying he was crazy and a broken record, but you take that shit to the next level of crazy. And it isn't helping anything, other than to give some of those who delight in seeing you display being mentally unbalanced over their power over you a good laugh.

You're a top ten witness and you are tying Blurt into the perception of crazy/property theft with your antics, as well as displaying that some can break the rules here and get away with what others are being blacklisted with the coal list for doing.

I hope one day (soon) you can release the trauma that has caused such an obsession in you. I hope even sooner you'll quit tying Blurt to it as you've been doing.

I remember going at it over there with nonameslefttouse years ago as he was directly tying your slander and plagiarism to actions that are officially condoned by Blurt. Seeing this behavior still continue with your tying us in with your anger is likely one of the more damaging relationships for Blurt.

You don't represent Blurt, and please stop making sure everyone over there associates your accusations and using other folks' creations with Blurt sanctioned activity. Hive is filled with folks who were loosely qualified as folks who would fit in without the ignorance of how this works for the world at large. You have made sure a good many of them are now predisposed to take a hard pass.

Blah blah blah, another do nothing loser who loves to point fingers.

More finger pointing if you get bored and need some more blah blah blah in your life.
