Education plays a pivotal role in the development of a people and therefore its importance cannot be overemphasized. In Nigeria, we have schools from nurseries all the way to institutions of higher learning. There are many universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other training institutes. Some schools offer arts, sciences, engineering, and agriculture, while some other schools pick one out of the list above to specialize in. There are universities that offer only science courses, some that offer engineering and sciences, and only arts. It is this way in almost every country on earth.

Although general universities are more common than specialized institutions. Why is it so? Building a specialized university can be very expensive and challenging while building general ones may not be as challenging. In the real sense of it, specialized universities cover as much land as general universities that offer way more courses than them. It looks unreasonable to some people but it is usually worth it. Different countries know their personal challenges and therefore make decisions that help combat their problems. In every country, the government knows where agriculture thrives, the government knows where politics thrives, the government knows where construction thrives, the government knows the headquarters of entertainment, the government knows where engineering thrives, and so on. It is only rational to build institutions that will help boost the productivity of every region of a country. Take this for example. A state in a country produces food, their main export is agriculture and water resources. It becomes clear to everyone that building a film school or a law school in such a place would be a waste of economic resources. Building a university of agriculture there is the most practical thing to do as they are historically a farming/ agricultural community.

In a place like Newyork, USA, most of the residents are bankers, actors, musicians, tech people, and lawyers. It is normal to have a general university for people that are as diverse as they are. At least their economy is strong enough to support the institutions.

A state that is mostly involved in information technology obviously needs universities and other institutes of technology to thrive. Everything happens for the correct reason. Before now people would have been bugging themselves with questions as to why some confusing institutions exist. I really hope I have made a valid point with this little piece of writing.
