The EU fears that the unity of the member countries of the union may collapse due to food and energy crises in the winter.
According to CNN, European officials and diplomats admitted that they think about it daily. In 2021, the EU received about 55% of all gas consumed from Russia. The block is also highly dependent on its oil.
It is noted that the next few months will be the most difficult for European states since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Citizens will experience a decline in living standards across the continent, and some will have to choose between heating and food.
“Once people feel that Kyiv is losing, they may start asking why we continue to supply expensive weapons to Ukraine during the economic crisis, why we are throwing money away,” said Teresa Fallon, director of the Center for Russian, European and Asian Studies.
