One important problem of COAL list

To be clear, I'm not against COAL list itself. More importantly, I'm not accusing anybody of any wrongdoing regarding COAL list. I'm grateful that BLURT is getting better and I appreciate BLURT team for it.

With that said, what I'm worrying about is the way COAL list is managed.

COAL list can be significantly effective when suppressing spamming and plagiarism. Some tech-savyy users will find a way to get past this, but as far as I can tell majority of BLURT users use the official web front-end. So this is a really powerful measure.

But if it is mismanaged, in worst case scenario, it can be used as an arbitrary censorship tool to suppress those who disagree with you. I'm sure COAL list was devised in good intentions, but you don't know what will happen in the future.

My suggestion is as follows:

When accounts are added to the COAL list, abuse claims and evidences supporting those claims must be made public. COAL list maintainer must submit a post presenting these details, so that everyone can check if the decision is fair and just. Discussions could be done via discord channel, but the results must be publicized on BLURT chain. If COAL list is managed in private, I fear it could undermine freedom of speech as this community grows bigger in the future.

I hope BLURT will thrive and become a great free-speech platform as always.

Thank you for reading!

I agree,

I suggest to create unofficial coal account. Anyone who sees plagiarized content would call this account with a mention under the post

That would be a good idea. Transparency is needed in one way or another. Thank you!

We also think the same. I’m developing a system for the wardens so there is a record of events and a record of the evidence against users who are put in COAL. The @blurtwardens account will be used for posting the evidence as replies to the plagiarized posts or to posts with ID theft.

None of us want to put people in COAL over simple mistakes. It’s for plagiarists and ID thieves.

That's a great news. Transparency is essential for strong measures like COAL. I appreciate your hard work, and I believe BLURT has a bright future ahead. Thank you!

You're absolutely right in this light. I completley agree. As part of the team for abuse checking, I will do my best to keep this organized and transparant as possible.

We also have a guy making a script so that the wardens can upload this info to post from the blurt warden account onto the chain. along with some other features. under development at the moment. eta is undpecified, SO, In the meanwhile I will see what I can do to keep this as transparent on my part in this team.

for anyone reading this. more Blurt Wardens are needed to check for abuse on the chain. especially for those who already have experience checking for abuse such as plagiarism.

or you can do so independetly like @endplagiarism either way, more abuse being reported the better.

And your right about having this on the chain. We are working towards that. And it is alot of work putting it all together.

I have only been with the team for a short while, but i will try to come up with a simple template(s) for posting this info.

we'll see how it goes.

thankyou for pointing this out.

As BLURT community grows, anti-plagiarism measures such as COAL will become more important. I think transparency is the best way to ensure fairness and integrity of those measures. I believe BLURT is on the road from "good" to "great". I hope everything will turn out great. Thank you!
