You have seen the beauty of Victoria when it poured out.. Do you know the story of the brothers who fought a battle between life and death at the bottom of that beautiful reservoir?
It was the year 1984.
Victoria's doors were made to open automatically.
Water is filling the reservoir.. Slowly the water is filling and the water level is rising.
The gate should be open but not yet.
More water should be sent through the gate somehow.
The entrance is at the bottom.. that means 400 feet under water..
It is very difficult to go to that depth. While the person in charge of the project was unable to do anything, the responsibility was taken by two outstanding divers of Sri Lanka, Ariyasheela Wickramanayake and Ruwan Wickramanayake from Galle Baddegama.
They knew this was a battle between life and death.
Never dived that deep before.
When the water goes deeper, the pressure increases by 14 pounds when going 33 feet deep.
Just imagine the pressure at the bottom of a 5, 6 feet swimming pool.
400 feet under .... 😱 Can you even imagine?
A very healthy person cannot even imagine such pressure.
At such a depth, too much pressure on the brain can cause mental confusion.
You can stay at the bottom for a maximum of seven minutes, which means it must be completed within seven minutes.
At the end of the seven minutes, one and a half hours should come to the surface. It is not possible to come in less time than that. If you come earlier, the nitrogen gas will increase and the blood will flow from the body.
Divers carry a rope while going underwater. The other end of the rope is handed over to a very trustworthy person.. Ariyasheela chose her own dead body for this. Because life sometimes depends on the person holding the end of the rope..
This rope gives signals that he is in a state of recovery under water.
Ariyasheela said to Ruwan:
"Brother, when I go to the bottom, I will give a separate signal. If you pull the rope twice and give a signal, pull me up.
If the signal from the rope stops, don't come to the bottom looking for me. If that happens, you will be in the same danger as me. If the signs stop, forget Oyama and go back."
There is nothing strange about what a brother feels when he says this.
So Aryasheela started diving.. Malaya also went.. Malaya stopped at the limit of 300 feet. Aryasheela took the rope and went under.
Malaya had in his head that "Iyandi is safe" because the signal is coming from the rope.
Aryasheela went under to see if a tree was stuck, but nothing was clear because of the darkness below 400 feet.
Can't handle the pressure either. In those days, diving suits were also too heavy, so it was a lot of inconvenience.
And the rope was tied very tightly.
Ariyasheela also felt that the pressure was too much and her head was going to explode.
At first, nothing could be done amid the difficulties.
Thus Ariyasheela had to dive three times.
On the second visit a plan was worked out, an iron wire with a hook was found to be suitable for opening the door.
But the iron wire could not be held at the bottom.
Aryasheela, who returned twice, did not receive any compliments from the whites.
"You have not gone to the bottom of 400.
In the midst of such displeasure, the third offense was attempted. At that time, our own people were used instead of the whites to lower the wire.
When the road was done properly and the door was opened, the white people's accusations that they "didn't go to the road" turned into rubbish.
How many people know about heroes who were born in our village like this...
This information is also lost in time..
Appreciation is however worth knowing that such cases have happened.
Let's pay our tribute to these two Malo brothers who fought a battle between life and death at a depth that never went below 400 feet....!
