But if it weren't for Ernest Harold Jones, an English-born artist and archaeologist, this discovery might never have been recorded in the history of archaeology.
He was a contemporary archaeologist and good friend of Howard Carter. Suffering from tuberculosis, he came to Egypt from the UK in 1904 for treatment. Being a skilled painter, he was able to work beautifully painting the artifacts found in the excavations of the Valley of the Kings, the royal burial site west of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. However, after barely one year in that job, he put aside his brushes by 1905 and began digging alone to find the hidden secrets of the Egyptian land.
During his exploration work he came across many rings and small archeological objects with strange, never-heard-of names. The name of those objects was "Tutankhamun"!. From the day he discovered this strange name, which no one had ever heard, his thoughts ran to wondering who this Tutankhamun was, whether there was a tomb belonging to him, etc. However, Jones was never able to find answers to his series of questions. In 1911, at the age of 34, he died of tuberculosis. Jones' funeral was arranged by his best friends Howard Carter and Lord Canavan. At the end of the funeral, the two discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, following the "strangely named" antiquities discovered by Jones. Howard Carter and Lord Canavan managed to paint their place in world history in golden letters, while Ernest Harold Jones, who began to pursue the mystery of Tutankhamen, became a forgotten man in history.
