Video Game Addiction

It's wonderful to do things you adore. But can a pastime be taken too far? And when does it become an addiction? That is the question that experts are attempting to address regarding video game play.

Despite the fact that gaming has been around for almost 50 years, research on its negative effects is still in its early stages. Various organisations have reached various opinions about whether problem gambling should be classified as an addiction.

In the 2018 edition of the World Health Organization's medical reference book, International Classification of Diseases, the term "gaming disorder" was introduced. The American Psychiatric Association's manual, the DSM-5, however, did not. (At the moment, gambling is the only "activity" recognized as a potential addiction.)

Seek advice from your doctor or therapist – or your child's physician if the person you're concerned about is your youngster – as soon as you suspect that gaming time is becoming excessive.

Treatment for video game addiction is similarly in its early phases of research. CBT, or cognitive behavioral therapy, is one type of therapy that can be beneficial. This is mental health treatment that teaches you how to substitute gaming-related ideas in order to improve your behavior.
