Very well-preserved and ancient corpses have been found throughout northwestern Europe. Bog bodies are usually found when workers drain sphagnum bogs and extract peat moss. No one knows for sure how many bog men have been exposed in the past. To date, there are about 700 documented discoveries of Bog Bodies.
the bodies
Bog bodies are found in various states. Some are just skeletons and scientists can only reveal a limited amount of information. Others are partially preserved and may still hold some traces of who they were or how they died. Finally, their clothes are still intact and their facial expressions are completely preserved as they were when they were buried. The most intriguing thing about these intact bog bodies is the revelation of how they died.
Most of the bog bodies that have been recovered so far have not died of natural causes. Some scientists believe that bogus bodies may have been victims of ritual sacrifices. There are some Bog Bodies that leave no question whether they were killed or not. Here are some examples of them.
Famous cases
The Hildremose woman was discovered in Denmark. She is believed to have died between 160 BC and 340 AD. Her body was so badly mutilated that one of her arms was completely amputated.
A dead body of a sixteen-year-old girl was found in Holland. She probably died in B.C. 170 and a.d. Between 230 Her body showed signs of strangulation. Of course there was still a rope around her neck.
The Elling woman was found in Denmark. She probably died between 160 BC and 340 AD. She had been hanged and when she was found, the noose used to kill her was still in her neck.
Franz the Red is the mummy of a young man found in 1900 in the Botanger Swamp on the border between Holland and Germany. Also known as "Neu Versen Man" or "Roter Franz" in German, the nickname is made up of color. His beard, hair and eyebrows are completely red, colored by the presence of the acids in the bog peat. The deceased, aged between 25 and 32, lived between 220 and 430 AD, and was killed by a deep cut to the throat, traces of which remain in the mummified soft tissue. The man was certainly an expert jockey, a species discovered due to the conformation of the femur bones, which reveal that he had developed considerable leg musculature as a result of being on horseback for so long in life.
The Tollund Man is probably the most annoying of all bogbodies. His face is perfectly preserved and alive. If it weren't for the unnatural color of his face, he could almost be asleep. He is still wearing a hat that was on his head when he died. He was between 30-40 years old when he died. He was hanged like the Elling Woman. The nozzle remains the same.
Bogus bodies are so well preserved because they are buried. It is important to note that although they were not actually buried, they were placed in crop water and covered with branches. The marshes where these bodies were buried are near salt water. The peat moss in these bogs collects salt from the air and releases acid into the bog water. Then the water spreads over the cells of the dead body.
Because of the acid, bacteria cannot survive in these bogs, so the bodies do not decompose normally. If there is enough acid in the water, the bones of the carcass will dissolve, leaving only the skin and hair. Calverous bogs do the opposite and only the skeleton will remain. The process of preserving the bodies intact turns the flesh of the corpse a dark leathery brown. It is believed that only the bodies thrown into the bogs will be preserved when the water is cold.
The oldest of the Bog Bodies is around 8000 BC and the youngest is from the Early Middle Ages. The clothes on some of these bodies are perfectly preserved with them and can tell us a lot about the clothes of their time. Scarves, hats, belts, shoes, hats and skirts were found in bog bodies. Most of them are made of woven wool or leather. Scientists have also managed to analyze the stomach contents of some bog-men. Most of them seem to have eaten porridge shortly before their death. Because of this, some believe that they were given a last meal before being sacrificed. Other Bog Bodies appear to be recipients of trepanning surgery.
Bog bodies have been found elsewhere, but none are as well preserved as the mysterious bog men of northwestern Europe. These entities have given some understanding to the people of their different times, but there are still many secrets. We can get a good view of the food they ate, the weapons they used and the clothes they wore, but why some of them were killed is still a matter of debate. There are many more that are often undiscovered. Who knows what we might learn about them in the future?
