'Charlie Chaplin', aka Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, is a world-renowned superstar who needs no commentary.
But what do you know about Charlie that you haven't seen.. He was able to fill the world with happiness, but due to the praises given to him by the same world, as well as many absurd slanders and accusations, his personal life was spent in isolation and full of lawsuits. Even when I was young, I spent a very bitter time due to my father's abandonment and the poverty I suffered at that time and my mother's illness.
Charlie was born on 16 April 1889 in London to parents who had careers as actors and singers. However, due to the separation of Charlie's father when he was very young, before the age of 9, he and his brother Sidney, who was 4 years older than him, had to work at two workplaces. Charlie and his beloved brother Sidney had to quickly find their livelihood due to their father defaulting on maintenance payments and their mother's illness preventing her from working. After being sent to work on a ship at the age of 12, Sidney returned due to illness and found his mother in a mental hospital and his brother working as street laborers for a living. did
As a teenager, Charlie joined a vaudeville troupe and struggled to get a part in one of its plays. With the help of her brother, Charlie, who was an intermittent student, she memorized lines and won a part in a play that later toured the country with the play. In this way, saving their lives, the two boys worked to the best of their ability, taking care of their mother as well, until they reached adolescence. Soon Sydney joined the group.
Sidney later joined Fred Carnow's troupe, England's leading silent comedy troupe, and became so successful that he became its leading actor. On his recommendation, Charlie was recruited into the group two years later, which eventually took them to the United States.
Charlie became very popular there and attracted the attention of the Hollywood film industry, after which Charlie began his silent film career in 1913. His success was so great that he earned the nickname The Little Tramp.
Charlie, who always remembers the love and protection he received in life from his brother, says that he received the protection of a father from him and the help he received from him to get acting and economic status in life was immense.
Charlie married three times in his life, which flowed with acting and film production and directing together with his brother, but they were unsuccessful marriages.
Showing that life is not always the same for everyone, Charlie also had to go through many obstacles to find happiness in his life, until he met someone who could touch his soul, until he met 'Ona O'Neill'. Then, in his own words about his life, he said,
"Meeting her was the happiest event of my entire life,"
"In the last twenty years I have learned the meaning of happiness."
"I was lucky enough to have the most wonderful wife. I could write more about this, but it belongs to love,
Perfect love is something so beautiful that words cannot even describe it without all frustrations."
That is in his own autobiography.
In that statement, the comfort he got from her in his life is spread.
He met 'Ona' in 1942 while casting for a film.
They met there and got married a year later.
At that time, Charlie was 53 years old and Ona was 18 years old. They were able to become the owners of a loving family of 8 children. Charlie found his happiness.
Married life with Charlie was not easy, scandals, media attacks, lawsuits and even his only film of the decade was a flop. A case was even filed regarding the paternity of a child from a popular actress of that time, which was also confirmed to be false by a medical examination. But during all these hardships, Ona handled all the turmoil around him well.
In 1952, while in London for the release of one of his films, he received a message that if he was to re-enter the United States, he would have to submit to questioning about his political views and moral conduct. But even this time, Ona did not give up on him and left the United States and they decided to settle in Switzerland with their children and moved to Corsier-sur-Vavey near Lake Geneva.
He loved the location of the house with its large garden and enjoyed his life with his family with lots of humor and joy while enjoying the beautiful views of the lake. His children attended a local school and spoke French fluently. However, Charlie did not learn French until 25 years later and his grandmother read the newspapers for him. During that time, Charlie contributed to the production of two films.
There is no doubt that Charlie's revolutionary political ideas appealed to the rulers who were ordered to submit to interrogation by the United States.
Charlie's brilliantly thought-provoking statements that are still valid today bear witness to this.
