Of course, we've always been told that water and electricity don't mix, but would you believe that in the early 1900s, electric showers were used to treat a variety of ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis? Yes, medical technicians will submerge a person in a vat of water, or, as this photo shows, submerge their limbs and run mild electrical charges through the water.
In fact, electrotherapy is an alternative medicine. It is still widespread in Japan today and you can find denkiburo, or electric pools, all over Japan. People use them to relieve arthritis pain or as a way to promote health in general.
