A lover of military uniforms
Prabhakaran's Ali Suratali
When an elephant is walking on the road, it is rare if someone passes by without looking at it saying "there's an elephant". There is no getting tired of seeing elephants and sacrifices. People of any rank love to see an elephant and watch its movements. How much do elephants play and mischievous, no matter how loud they are?
So is Ali. Elephants, who are longing for human company, always want to be petted. We saw an elephant pet who likes to be petted by people at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. She is a beautiful gem.
Menika is not a pet like this. It is interesting to hear her past stories and her journey to Pinna.
"Prabhakaran's baby elephant is in Pinnavala."
Fellow photographer Shilpi Sudham Gunasinghe told us the clue about Manika. After confirming the news, we went to Pinnawala in Takahani the other day. It was to see Prabhakaran's baby elephant.
"Gem"
When we went there and told the relevant officials about our visit, one of the officials raised his voice.
As soon as that voice was raised, a stylish cat came running along the narrow path making a 'Kuru Kuru' sound from its throat. Dark black, she is a strange shaper. The woman who jumped and ran stopped in front of the person who called Manika. Throwing the hose around the man's shoulders, she began to drink the leela of courtship. Although a saddhant, she is cuddly with people.
"That's Menik and Duminda to take care of him. Duminda and Premaratne take care of Manika. Menika is a special person for merits. Menika likes people who love her. Sameera Rathnayake, Assistant Controller of Pinnawala, explained to us about Menika.
The story of Menika, who has a special appearance compared to other elephants, is also wonderful. Menika was in Dehiwala Zoo before coming to Pinna. Before that, Menika was at the 514 brigade headquarters in Jaffna. How was an elephant with the army during the war? You might think so.
Those who were in the army at that time and were involved in that operation know the past story of the army receiving manika very well. We were able to find Major Dimuth Mahalianage of the 514 Brigade Headquarters in Jaffna who knew that story well. He is now retired from the army.
"During the operation to liberate the Jaffna peninsula from terrorists, the army had freed this child from a children's park belonging to the LTTE organization. There were bears and other animals in that park, including this bear. Being in a children's park, Atani was tame to people.
Meniki was about five years old when we got her. Menika is the name we gave. We have heard that Menika is a baby elephant caught from the Mullaitivu forest. Since there were no jackfruit trees in Jaffna, Meniki had to feed only coconut branches.
Infantry Corporal Wijesinghe was trained to take care of Menika. Corporal Wijesinghe is going to exercise in the morning. Menik also goes to exercise with him. In short, Menika grew up like a soldier. At that time, if someone came to Jaffna as a guest, he would welcome Manika."
Mr. Mahaliana tells Menika's past story. Manika, who was cuddly with the 514 brigade, never harassed anyone. But when someone made fun of her, she taught them good lessons. Remembering the pranks done by Menika when she was younger, Mr. Mahaliana tells us and Menika's pranks.
"One day, one of our soldiers handed Meniki half a loaf of bread. He joked without giving it all at once. Remembering this, Menika took the soldier's trunk and trampled it in the mud. Wijesingha left the hendu to take care of Manika for another day and climbed the tree to cut coconut branches.
Menika stomped on the branch and broke it in two, not letting Wijesingha come down from the tree and kept digging around the tree. Wijesingha was brought down from the tree by moving the gem with great difficulty. Sometimes we go on Manik's back. Menika is punishing us for that. That is to take us to the Nellie tree inside the camp.
The person on Menik's back needs to give Nelly Nelly to Menik's stomach. Menika went to Jaffna town and was friends with the shops. He was walking around Jaffna town for about two hours a day. I was used to eating food given by people in shops. And that's how every morning we go to the Naga Vihara with our people and worship the Buddha. Sometimes Manika is near the canteen. People who come to the canteen must buy ice cream for Meniki. If not given, they will take it by force. When she saw the army, Manika asked them to blow the horn.
I remember we organized a New Year celebration one year. The dining table was well prepared. Menika was bound to disrupt the festival. But Manika came and took off the purple vines and ate the whole dinner table. Menika was the one who set the dinner table that year. One time Manika broke into the camp's bakery early in the morning and stole it. Vegetables are brought to the camp from Jaffna town around 3:30 to 4 pm. Every time at that time, Menika goes to the gate with her mind.
Menika will not be allowed to enter the vehicle unless the people bringing those vegetables bring some fruit for Menika to eat. There is no end to Maniki's tricks. Menika was the only elephant in Jaffna at that time. Once the elephant from the Gangarama Temple in Colombo was brought to a pilgrimage at the Naga Vihara in Jaffna. Seeing that elephant that day, Menike screamed and got scared and worried. We calmed down with great difficulty."
She loved her military friends very much. The army members also fell in love with Manike. Because of this bond, Manike loves the military uniform even today.
