The eighteen bends starting from Ududumbara police area and ending at Hasalaka police area. Even if you have the ability to make roads, you have to look for the construction of such a difficult road. This preparation is to ask about the past story of the eighteen bends, where only 17 bends have been seen today. Many years ago, European nations came to Sri Lanka and took control of Sri Lanka. Among them, the Portuguese did the work that the Dutch could not. So, after the British made Sri Lanka a colony, they started planting plantations. tea Efforts were made to spread these noki plantations like rubber, coffee, cinchona etc. That plantation spread rapidly in the mountains. Meanwhile, the Europeans wanted to take their products to Colombo. Therefore, they felt the need for a road system. That is why a road is being prepared from Colombo to Kandy.
But in the meantime, due to Lord Torrington's imposition of new tax policies in 1848, a rebellion was created in the upper country. Not only that, around 1850 tea and cardamom cultivation also started in Hunnasgiri province. Due to these reasons, the British realized that they could not stop creating roads from Kandy and roads were built up to Ududumbara. But the British did not have much understanding about building roads, so they sought the opinions of the people of the province for this purpose.
At that time, there were 4 heads of Ududumbara village, Gampaha West Korale, Gampaha East Korale, Village Deka Korale, and Kanda Pahala Korale. It is the case against the Kadahapola owners who were arrested by the British during the Udara Rebellion and shot to death in one day. Because of this, the Korale four contacted a person from Vedi village and pointed out the most difficult way to go to Vedi village. Anyway, after climbing to the top of Hunnasgiri and seeing Mahiangana with a big slope, the English decided to build the road with curves.
According to another legend, at that time there was talk of showing the way from the forest areas where there are no villages to protect the girls of the villages from the English. So anyway, labor was exploited from our own people to build that road. At that time, every adult male had to join the free road building activities 6 days a week. If not, a body tax of three shillings has to be paid. It was called road tax.
Anyway, this eighteen bend was created by preparing the road from Ududumbara to Nasaruwa, Kovilmada, Tawalan Thanna, Thammitiyana and Thispana. So once an engineer had said that if a straight string is lowered from the first bend to the last bend, the distance will be less than 500 meters. So all the 18 bends are less than half a kilometer apart. So, to climb or descend half a kilometer, one has to go around the mountain for a distance of 7 kilometers.
Anyway, it is mentioned that the second turn of the eighteen turns was very dangerous. It was impossible to drive the bend without stopping there and reversing the vehicle. The ten-eighth bend that used to be covered with stone asphalt is now a comfortable and safe beautiful road covered with carpet. This road, which was about 3 meters wide at that time, is now about 8.5 meters wide with two lanes. Also, 9 bridges and 30 culverts have been constructed.
So, around 5000 trees had to be cut down to build this road. Along with that, this road created by the sweat of the poor people is one of the most difficult roads in Sri Lanka. But a very beautiful journey. How many of our people must have died while preparing this road. Also, these black stones had to be broken in a way that would be harmful to the environment and the surrounding residents. For that, the stones were blasted using traditional drilling as well as chemical methods. So, amid many challenges, this road was built and the road was widened again.
More than 30 years have passed since this eighteen bend, which is a national heritage of our country. So, keeping in mind the wonderful history, it is good to go around the Eighteenth Bend.
